In the case study we defined five main problems Outback Steak House is facing at the present time. From these 5 problems we will choose one to look at more in depth and give an analysis and a solution to solving that problem. One of the main problems that we found in the case was the fact there is very stiff competition not only in the casual dining business, but specifically the steakhouse business. Competition comes from many places; restaurants themselves are the obvious choice, places like Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon, Sizzlers, and other restaurants. Also many traditional restaurants have upgraded their steak choices in order to compete with Outback. Along the same lines as direct competition is the fact that the restaurant industry is close to saturation. Analysts have said, “Casual dining operators such as Outback were close to saturation and questioned whether the firm could withstand the intense competitive pressures characteristic of the industry” (W-80). One way to solve this problem is to differentiate themselves from other restaurants even more than they already do. Also they need to show the consumer that they need to eat at Outback, this can be accomplished through marketing and promotion.

Another problem that we found was that Outback Steakhouse has been traditionally seen as a dinner destination and has played this role by only being open seven hours a day from 40pm to 110pm. This was stated as a strength in the case, but we feel that Outback is missing out on the lunch crowd and could dramatically increase business by adjusting their traditional hours of operation, they are busy during the dinner hours, why not try lunch?

Recently, personal health has become a large issue in American culture and this shift in ideals has created new problems for restaurants. The trend to cut back on the intake of red meat has created a problem for restaurants like Outback, which traditionally serve high quality red meat. If the current trend continues and Americans continue to watch how much red meat they eat, Outback will have to find a way to combat these ideals in order to stay successful. Possible alternatives are serving more chicken and fish and possibly adding to their menu for the more health-conscious consumer. Outback will never be known as a health food restaurant, but by giving the health conscious consumer more options they have a chance to tap into that market.

After reading the case and personally eating at an Outback, we have found that they are currently unable to meet customer demand. People have been known to wait up to three hours to eat at their restaurants. We feel that they are missing out on the people who don’t have the time to wait to eat their steaks. By increasing the size of their restaurants we feel that they will better be able to serve their customer base. Along with expansion, they should also look into expanding the size of their waiting area, so that the customers that do choose to wait are entertained and have an overall great experience at the restaurant. The customer should leave not only with a full stomach but also a smile from an all-around good dining experience.

The final problem that we feel Outback is facing is the fact that they are lacking productive management structure. Currently headquarters in Tampa employ about 80 people, this can currently be seen as a great strength for Outback, it shows that they are very efficient, and get a lot done with few resources. In the future we feel that Outback will be faced with problems due to their increased size and complexity (adding another restaurant chain). The way that we see to alleviate this problem is for them to look at their current structure and possibly consider a restructuring of their management process. This will be a great task, but in order to avoid problems in the future we feel it is necessary.

A SWOT Analysis of the Kyocera Corporation

In April of 15, Kazuo Inamori started a small ceramics company in Kyoto, Japan. With only three million yen in capital, and a work force of only twenty-eight employees, Kyoto Ceramics (later shortened to Kyocera) began to produce quality ceramic products. Since then it has grown into a corporation that produces various business equipment, electronic devices, and ceramic products. The corporation now has over fourteen thousand employees, and over one hundred and fifteen billion yen in capital. The corporation owns one hundred and sixty-one group companies with over forty-four thousand employees. (Kyocera homepage, 00, http//global.kyocera.com/ company/gaiyou.html)

During the early 160’s the company was off to a tough start. Inamori was not trained in management, and started off doing what he thought was right. One of the first objectives his company embodied was customer satisfaction. Inamori was totally committed to putting out quality products, and pleasing his customers. The employees would work sixteen-hour days, six days a week, and would stay in a company dormitory. (Miller, 18) This work ethic was in keeping with Japanese customs, and would pave the way for the future success of the company.

The market for Kyocera products was not very strong in Japan in the early 160’s. Inamori realized that in order for his company to grow, he would have to venture away from the rigid Japanese business customs and mindset. In 16 Inamori traveled to the United States, and realized that there was a lot of potential in the emerging semiconductor business. In 168 a representative office was opened in California. (Kyocera homepage, 00, http//global.kyocera.com/company/history.html)

Initially the company was known more for their customer support than they were for their products. Inamori’s belief in customer satisfaction quickly earned him a spotless reputation in the United States. They were able to help customers develop high technology solutions, when other companies simply would not, or could not. They would also provide solutions in days, when their competitors would take weeks.

During the 170’s and 180’s, the company began to diversify. Kyocera acquired many new businesses that were on the verge of bankruptcy. The company also entered many new markets through start up companies. They would find an attractive company, which was struggling for capital to get off their feet, and buy it. This has lead to Kyocera’s wide range of products.

Today the Kyocera Corporation is a leading manufacturer of telecommunications, information, and optical precision equipment, as well as ceramic components used in semiconductor parts. The Kyocera Corporation has grown to be one of the most admired companies in Japan and abroad. (Miller, 18) They have successfully integrated new ideas and approaches to problem solving with traditional beliefs and business customs.

Strengths

One of the greatest strengths that Kyocera has is diversification. The company has more than one hundred and sixty companies making products in seventeen broad categories. Kyocera Corporation grosses over six billion dollars a year, and produces three-fifths of the world’s ceramic semiconductor packages. Kyocera has shown the ability to adapt to changing market conditions and has gotten into strong growth areas while they were still in their earliest stages.

The Kyocera Corporation prides itself on its ability to take care of customers and treat everyone sincerely. Every morning, workers discuss a twelve-chapter blue book, which instills a competitive spirit, while reinforcing the companies’ motto, “Respect the divine and love people.” (Kyocera homepage, 00, http//global.kyocera.com/company/ rinen.html) Workers with the company are known to be fiercely loyal, even though their hard work is not rewarded with monetary bonuses. Instead they are expected to work for possible promotions in the company, the knowledge that they have done the best job they could possibly do, and the fact that they have taken care of the customer. Not surprisingly, the morale of the employees is quite high.

Two-thirds of Kyocera Corporations sales come from their ceramic products. These are broken into three broad, ever growing fields. They are quality of life products, environmental preservation products, and information and communications products. Some of the products included in these groups range from semiconductor parts, to solar panels, to dental and hip joint implants. (Kyocera homepage, 00, http//global.kyocera .com/company/keiei.html)

When Kyocera enters into a new market, they do a very good analysis before hand. For that reason, their plans for acquisition of new companies usually goes as planned. If for some reason the newly acquired company does not meet the needs of the corporation, or turns out to be a bad purchase, they have found ways for the technology to benefit the already established companies.

Kyocera has established itself as an industry leader in many different fields. They have over forty years of experience, and have proven their management skills time and time again. Kyocera is sure to enjoy a long, and prosperous life as a corporation.

Weaknesses

While it’s imperative for an organization to be aware of its strengths, it is also very important to be aware of its weaknesses. Kyocera has been in operation for over forty years because management has had the keen ability to determine the organization’s deficiencies. With all that Kyocera does right, it is difficult to pinpoint the organization’s weaknesses. Due to the fact that Kyocera Corportation has many subsidiaries, management must be concerned with the headquarters along with entirely separate organizations from various industries. An accurate analysis should be considered from an internal and external viewpoint. It’s important that the analysis be truthful so that actions can be taken to overcome the weaknesses as quickly as possible. From the viewpoint of the entire Kyocera Corportation, there are a few potential weaknesses that could be minimized so as not to impair customer satisfaction. Internally, the management techniques could be adjusted to reflect a more “Westernized” style of management. The company motto “respect the divine and love the people” obviously does not apply to employees. The pressure for employees to work long hours, offer complete devotion, to marry other employees and be buried in the company cemetery could be preventing Kyocera from attracting quality employees. Although it has been successful in the past, Kyocera now has a greater number of employees (and customers) who are not accustomed to the Japanese culture. Kyocera maintains the Japanese reward system where individuals do not receive any additional pay and the idea that superior workers should contribute their capabilities for the “good of the entire group” (Miller, 18). In the past it may have been enough to encourage individuals to excel; however, today (even in Japan where collectivism is not as strong as it has been in previous generations) a more modern approach to motivation could have a positive effect.

Even though the amoeba style of management used by Kyocera has obvious benefits (such as small manageable group size, and leaders are selected on qualifications) there are not any incentives to attain a position of leadership. The head of the amoeba (or leadership role) includes the same workplace and employee benefits as other team members. Also, the amobea’s performance goals are too rigid. The group develops monthly goals and annual goals. The monthly goal plans do not change, even in response to industry fluctations. Master annual goals are revised mid-year to reflect changing conditions but monthly goals are not altered once the yearly goals are set into motion (Miller, 18). The technology industry is so volatile that such rigid adherence to goals could cost Kyocera profits if they are not able to adapt to the ever- changing global market on a more short-term basis.

Koycer’s solar energy group went for more than twenty years with out showing regular profits and avoided being criticized because they were able to show progress (Miller, 18). The inability to alter goals or issue a designated amount or time or money for specific divisions or specifically Research and Development projects could be a weakness. Using the resources of the larger corporation allows less successful divisions to maintain operation. If it eventually pays off from the development of new products or new technology, then in the long run it would be worth the investment. However, the costs associated with such practices could prove insurmountable if left unmonitored. Currently the optics division of Kyocera Corporation is experiencing a decrease in sales of seventeen percent due to the lessening demand for optical communication components (Kyocera, 00). This trend could continue, yet the optics division would remain unchanged because of funding provided by the parent corporation in the hope that it will eventually turn a significant profit; meanwhile they are using valuable resources that could offer greater benefit somewhere else. If the division can show that it is progressing in some significant way, it will be allowed to operate unchanged.

While diversification is a strength it could also be listed as a weakness. Kyocera has locations in seventeen different countries producing products in over nine different industries, though some are interrelated. They even provide real estate services! In the past Kyocera acquired business instead of starting new businesses from the ground level. Instead of specializing in any specific field they seem to prefer vertical integration. Even though it is reasonable to believe that for all the success Kyocera has had, there have been some unsuccessful business ventures that are still in progress in the hope that it will eventually turn a profit.

Opportunities

Even though Kyocera is hugely successful, there is always room for improvement. The technology industry is in constant motion and those organizations that remain on the cutting edge will benefit significantly. One obvious opportunity that exists is the advancement of solar energy products. Half of the world’s population has no electricity and seventy percent do not have water within their domestic location. The virtually unmet needs of the undeveloped or underdeveloped countries for communication services offer a huge market with little competition.

As recent as September 00 Kyocera Wireless Corporation announced management changeover due to changes in economic and market environments as a greater emphasis was placed on scale and the pursuit of integration for the telecom industry (Kyocera, 00). Kyocera purchased Qualcomm in 001 and became one of the leaders in the CDMA segment (newest technology for data transmission). This is evidence of the power of Kyocera’s innovation and funding. They regularly invest in the future developments of products for their various industries while withstanding market changes. The opportunities for new technology in the various fields of Kyocera Corporation are virtually endless. As trade regulations decrease across the global market, Kyocera has the ability to move the manufacturing and packaging of its products to the least costly location.

Of course, there is room for management to improve its relationship with their employees. Kyocera could offer incentive plans, better working hours and improved working conditions. The use of video conferencing could reduce the cost and conflict associated with the current management meetings. The opportunity exist to take an even greater share of the market in each respective industry if Kyocera strives to attain customer satisfaction with quality products and services while offering competitive pricing.

Threats

Threats are negative external forces that inhibit a company’s ability to achieve its objectives. Threats to a business could be new competitors entering the local market, a government regulation that affects the company, an economic recession, rising interest rates, technology advances or price wars with competitors.

There are several threats that Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corporation could encounter because of its global market and the constant introduction of new products.

First, we will discuss increased trade barriers. The government can place restrictions on the importing and exporting of goods of a company in the global market. Kyocera has a large global market with sixty-two manufacturing plants, one hundred sixty-one group companies and thirty-four subsidiaries in Europe. (Kyocera) Since the attacks of September 11, the United States Customs office has increased security for travelers as well as shipment of goods to and from other countries.

Kyocera manufactures products that could pose a threat such as knives, scissors and slitters made from a material called Zirconia. This material is used to produce a high quality product for sharpness. Manufacturing this type of product could make importing and exporting very difficult if Kyocera does not maintain an alliance with the government.

Kyocera has taken this threat seriously and was recently accepted as a member of the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program. This program is a joint government-business initiative to give corporations an active role in the war against terrorism by building cooperative relationships that strengthen supply chain and border security.

As a member of this program, Kyocera has demonstrated that it has met all C-TPAT supply chain security requirements and has committed to ensuring the ongoing integrity of its corporate security practices. (Kyocera,n.d)

Second, new competition has always been a major threat for Kyocera. One of the main competitors, CoorsTek, formerly Coors Porcelain Company, a division of Coors Brewing Company, triggered the United States Department of Commerce’s interest in the ceramic packaging industry when it claimed that Kyocera domination of the industry constituted a threat to national security and economic competitiveness. Although the threat was overturned by firms lobbying on behalf of Kyocera, Kyocera must continue to safeguard against these threats. (Miller, 181, C46)

Also with the threat of new competition enters new products and services. As new companies enter the market they usually develop a new product or service. CoorsTek announced a new service that could potentially become a threat to Kyocera.

CoorsTek has demonstrated this threat by creating specialized teams to work with customers to quickly design, develop, manufacture, and deliver new products. These teams are called “Rapid Product Introduction Teams.” According to Mark Petty, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for CoorsTek, “”This service provides a complete solution to customers requiring a fast response to market demands.”” (Hartman, 00)

This is a service that Kyocera currently does not provide although they work closely with their customers and potential customers in designing and technical assistance of products at no extra charge.

In its core business area of ceramic housing for semiconductors, Kyocera faces its most important threat from plastics. This was because plastic proved to be an effective low-cost alternative for housing many of the semiconductors used in the personal computer industry. (Miller, 18, C46)

Third, there may be new regulations that the government can enforce in reference to international trade laws. The role of national governments in foreign trade is significantly greater in domestic transactions. Every country in the world has regulations regarding how products may either enter, transverse or leave is borders. This is because governments generally tax goods imported from foreign countries. (Alberta-Canada)

These regulations stem from a country’s desire to protect its domestic industry from the perceived harm associated with foreign competition. While this protection often takes the form of punitive tariff duties, they can also extend to import quotas and embargoes against specific products.

With Kyocera having companies all over the world, these regulations can have a substantial bearing on the exporting of goods. These regulations can differ significantly from one nation to another. The continued presence of tariffs makes it necessary to maintain elaborate control systems to regulate and monitor the international flow of goods.

With threats constantly being a factor in any corporation, Kyocera is headed in the right direction. They are continuously seeking ways to overcome potential threats to their company.

Recommendations

Kyocera is a multi-faceted and multi-cultural company with endless ideas for design, development and production of various products. They are entering a new age of revolution, the environmental revolution, and have hit this challenge head on. Kyocera believes they are uniquely suited to support this critical element by their advanced ceramic materials and advanced technology.

Kyocera should continue striving for excellence in customer satisfaction and providing a high quality product at the best price.

After getting my graduate degree in computer science 5 years ago I started to work in a small company but with a lot of customers world wide. I started as a software developer but very soon my curious nature was asking why and what for are we developing the software. I wanted to know the whole background what was very welcomed by my bosses and very soon I was promoted to the product manager and I had to work much closer with our customers and suddenly there were some decision which I had to make. Having no experience in that I felt uncertainty and it was not so easy to take the responsibility and make some decisions. However, according to the reaction of my bosses the decisions I took were not that bad and they sent me to America as a Customer Support Manager Americas (Canada, US and South America) to set an office in the States in order penetrate American market.

I set up an office where now 0 people are working but that was a very hard work and sometimes due to lack of managerial education and experience. However, I succeed and promised to myself that I have to go to proper school where I will learn the managerial skills which will help me in the future.

My post-MBA short-term goal is to find a company which is dealing with customers from the whole world and try to help to penetrate the world market which is getting more and more global.

A long-term goal would be to define the strategy how to be successful on the competitive market on the long run and how to survive those ups and downs on the market without a huge influence on the company I work for.

Regarded as his “most famous piece of fiction,” “The Fall of the House of Usher” inspires the usual horror found in most works by Poe. Every aspect expected from a Poe piece is found within this story. There is the first person narrative, the division of personality, and Gothic style; which all characterize classic Poe. Although some critics feel that the tale is “difficult to read” and “an overdone and vulgar fantasy;” most recognize it as the masterpiece it is. From the gloomy beginning to the shocking conclusion, “The Fall of the House of Usher” implements every attribute needed to create a model narration. As in most Poe stories, the unnamed narrator experiences a horrific sight. This harrowing incident is the realization by himself and Roderick Usher that they have in fact buried Madeline Usher alive. The thought of this atrocity causes the narrator to flee from the house indefinitely. He does not know at the time that the house will subsequently cave in after his departure. Almost every tale written by Poe is written in this fashion. Although most stories employ no real plot or characterization, the final terrible experience is typical. This is due to occurrences in Poe’s own life involving the illness of his child-bride Virginia. Her untimely death stirred an interest in the supernatural that pervaded his writing from that point on. Therefore, all first person narrators in Poe’s work encounter death in some mysterious and grave manner that helps Poe to cope with his personal issues. There is a division of personality found in “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which also presents itself in “William Wilson.” In the tale being discussed, Roderick and Madeline Usher are twins whose health is slowly diminishing. While Madeline seems to have accepted her fate, it looks as if Roderick does not quite understand his recent transformation. It is almost as if all the worry and frustration felt by both is channeled through Roderick. While he is slowly losing his mind, Madeline becomes increasingly sedate. The narrator mentions that the master of the house has indeed changed a great deal. Apparently, some “curse” has overcome him and his sister causing their recent decline in spirits, sanity, and health. Throughout the story, both are equally affected by the other’s actions. This element is found in many Poe tales, although usually it involves a dual nature within a single character. Numerous critics castigate Poe’s writing for its highly Gothic style. It is “too serious” and conveys a certain difficulty in reading. They claim that this particular style hinders the reader from being able to handle more than one story at a time. Nevertheless, Poe’s writing does reflect upon his own personality. Edgar Allen Poe was a staid and somber man, and these traits shine through his writing. Also, it seems that perhaps he did not intend for more than one story to be dealt with at a time. Poe wrote in a highly stylized way in order to contribute to the overall mood of the piece of fiction. Without that edge, his work would lose much of its eeriness. “The Fall of the House of Usher” certainly incorporates such language as evidenced by phrases such as “singularly dreary tract” and “whither shall I fly.” The elevated language and carefully chosen adjectives weigh on the reader throughout the story. Finally, while some critics may lambaste the work of Poe as “fanciful ramblings,” it stands to reason that perhaps they are mistaken. Carefully thought out narration, sensible characterization, and appropriate diction pervade not only “The Fall of the House of Usher,” but every subsequent Poe work also. While the discussed piece is the best example of his genius many other manuscripts fall into these same patterns. Nonetheless, “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a classic work that holds its own among the most recognized and celebrated short stories ever read

A New Corporation Digital Style

I. CASE FACTS & BACKGROUND

DigitalC (DC) is an upstart in the IT consulting and services industry. Since mid 000, the firm has specialized in delivering high-end custom products and services to a small but rapidly growing clientele base. The products include, but are not limited to web site publication services, programming and data driven services, printing and design services, and an accredited Design Institute. At the Design Institute, customers become students and learn how support products purchased from DC. To provide these products, DC has an organizational design divided into the areas of application design, software engineering, marketing, customer support, among other areas. Currently, there are three players involved in the operation Chad Collins, President/Lead Programming Designer, Bernard “Bern”, Designer, and Pete Talick, Designer/Instructor.

Since the inception of the firm, besides some short lulls in sales, the business has grown at a rapid pace. Revenues in ‘01 were 75k, ‘0 estimates are 15k. In ’0, DC forecasts earnings/revenues to be 75k, a 00% annualized growth rate.

Lately, DC has been receiving an increased amount of customer complaints. Based on my preliminary evaluation, customers are complaining about deadline delinquencies, unreturned phone calls, and communication breakdowns. A common concern is that, “the machine seems to answer more often than a live customer service representative.” In addition, customers feel that obtaining product maintenance or enhancements are, “always expensive, hard to get quick turn-around on. They also increase the end product cost significantly.”

Within the company, design personnel complain that they are underpaid, understaffed, and are often under extreme deadline pressures. Complaints to the President seem to get confrontational, and the staff member leaves feeling ignored. The President is unsympathetic to complaints stating he is responsible for the design and inspiration for all the products, and he does 5% of the work. Furthermore, the President complains that he is “wearing too many hats” to keep all of his constituents satisfied.” Finally, the President justifies keeping things the way there are because sales volumes are up, fixed cost are covered, and at this point these are the main operative goals of the firm.

As a consultant, in the following pages I will outline the problems I see with DigitalC, and recommend solutions to implement. All recommendations are in effort to align the behaviors of the employees with the firm’s goals, and to create a corporate environment of accomplishment and enjoyment.

II. MAJOR ORGANIZATIONAL ISSUES

Problem 1 Goals are focused on sales, not customer satisfaction.

In DC’s industry, customers likely have the buying power. Therefore, there are most many substitutes for DC’s products. Also, sales figures indicate that, while customers are price-sensitive to a degree, quality and compatibility are more important than price. If the products are not compatible with current systems, or if they just do not work, the customer will feel he/she has wasted their money and will not return.

The company’s real goals both stated and unstated are solely focused on increasing sales by developing the most products in the least amount of time and at the lowest cost. However, these goals are in conflict with the external environment. Most importantly, they sacrifice the company’s most important stakeholders its customers. DC need to deliver what the customer really wants; which is a quality product that works well and is compatible with current systems, and technical support that is knowledgeable and available.

Problem The corporate culture is dominated by the President, and the startup lacks communication channels necessary to rally employees around a common vision.

DC is a relaxed atmosphere in which the employees dress very casual. Moreover, the President often comes in late in the morning, takes long lunches, and leaves the office for extended periods to run errands. These hours are justified by the president when the office stays open late, and staff sometimes works all night. However, during the morning, often calls get dropped, go to voice mail, or never get picked up. Why? No one is there. Although this schedule provides a feeling of flexibility for the president and his employees, by maintaining this schedule, the business will not become an industry leader.

My preliminary analysis indicates that DC has not formally designed a mission or vision statement. If they have, it is not on any of there marketing materials, web-site, and no evidence suggests there is one from my office visits.

I recommend DC order polo shirts with their logo on them. Require members of the organization to wear the company shirt every shift with a standard for the rest of the attire, pants/shorts and shoes. When clients come visit dress standards will create a perception of stability. In addition, a dress code will promote customer and employee buy in.

DC needs to develop and clearly communicate the vision and mission statements to its employees and clients. This will demonstrate DC’s commitment and dedication to providing an excellent product supported with superior client services. Once the vision is established the President must use every means and opportunity available to communicate the vision to all employees and clients. Post the vision and mission statements on the front and back of business cards, make posters and put them up in the office. Place the statements, or derivates of the statements, on marketing materials, and on the front page of their website. Basically, place them wherever possible. Have a meeting with all employees to ceremonially re-establish the operative goals of the firm. These statements summarize the firm’s commitments and goals; therefore they should be understood by the clients and become the blood life of the firm’s culture. Examples of a vision and mission statement for DC are below.

In Taiwan, the Ministry of Education has conducted the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in English teaching in junior high schools. However, the teaching pedagogy and material and purpose of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which comes from Western countries, are not suitable to Taiwan junior high school students and teachers, resulting from the policy of entrance examination, class size, teachers’ quality, and students’ attitude. It is suggested that designing curriculum suitable to the real situation of educational environment, improving the entrance examination, training qualified teachers, and changing students’ attitude will help to promote the efficiency of Communicative Language teaching in junior high schools in Taiwan. It needs further research to design to the curriculum combining the communicative approach and grammar-translation approach, which is appropriate to English learning in junior high schools in Taiwan.

Introduction

English is an essential subject in junior high school in Taiwan. Parents and teachers expect that the students can successfully pass the exam, get higher education, and find a good job with proficient English in the future. However, English learning in junior high school at present either confuses or troubles students, parents, and even teachers, which results in a conflict between Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and grammar-translation teaching. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is strongly recommended and launched by the Ministry of Education of the government and many professional English educators in Taiwan.

Research has showed that Communicative Language Teaching promotes students’ proficiency in English. James D. Allen and Sun Changshun (1) demonstrated the successful teaching of a middle school teacher, who used Communicative Language Teaching to motivate students’ interest in learning English. Chi-Kim Cheung (001) suggested using public culture in the communicative approach to fit students’ psychological and social needs and stimulated students’ interest in learning in the classroom. Yi Yang (1) stated that the communicative approach provided the four skills of English competence--listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Yi’an Wu (001) claimed that cultivating a qualified teacher and designing specialized materials helped carry out this new teaching method. Liming Yu (001) even suggested making laws to effect the new change in English teaching.

However, most of the researches mentioned above claimed to abandon grammar-translation approach, except Yang (1). In Yang’s (1) research, grammar knowledge provided the basis of language development, “like building a house, you first have to construct a foundation so that your house is firm and strong”(p.5). In addition, in Defeng Li’s (18) research, Communicative Language Teaching did not make English learning successful in some Asian countries, like South Korea, Japan, and China.

Although the efficiency of traditional grammar translation has caused a lot of debate because students lack listening and speaking competence, many teachers and parents still want to maintain this old teaching method because many grammatical questions are still focused on in the entrance examination, and those students taught with Communicative Language Teaching do not upgrade their English proficiency. Thus, the efficiency of this new approach is also challenged by some factors, which result from the basic conditions of the educational policy, the exam, the teachers, and the students. The situation is similar to other Asian countries in Li’s (18) research.

The issues in this paper are ascertained from my experience and observation in the junior high school in Taiwan for seventeen years. In my teaching, I usually explained and translated the grammatical structures sentence by sentence in the textbook within a limited time. Most of my colleagues and my friends who are English teachers in other junior high schools teach in the same way. Our students just listened, took notes, and prepared for the tests in English class. By drawing on the experiences of the research above, it is suggested that reforming the examination, training qualified teachers, evoking students’ interest in English will help to promote the communicative approach in junior high school. In addition, the issues in this paper make English educators in Taiwan contemplate that abandoning the grammar-translation approach is not the best way to promote the quality of English learning in junior high schools in Taiwan. The best way is to keep grammar teaching and to make CLT fit the conditions of English teaching in Taiwan.

How to make Communicative Language Teaching fit the conditions of English teaching in junior high schools leads to further deliberation in the design of curriculum, which should attract the attention of those people who are responsible for educational policy decision, and to those who engage in English learning and teaching.

The difference aspects between Communicative Language Teaching and traditional grammar-translation teaching

The communicative approach emphasizes to learn of the functional and meaningful language and to use student-centered activities, which focus on creating natural-like learning situations. On the other hand, the grammar translation emphasizes the acquisition of accurate forms and grammar rules. Yang (1) indicated, “ The no-grammar front is represented by Krashen (18), who distinguished between language learning and language acquisition. The former refers to conscious learning assisted by explicit rules, the latter to subconscious learning developed from natural communication” (p.1). Patsy M. Lightbown & Nina Spada (1) pointed out that for Krashen, the process of second language acquisition was similar to the acquisition of the first language, which was through the natural and subconscious order, not the orders of the rules learned in class. Learning the rules can not acquire language.

“Krashen’s assertion has been very influential in supporting communicative language teaching…. ,with its primary focus on using language for meaningful interaction and for accomplishing tasks, rather than on learning rules, has won support form many teachers and learners”(p.40).

The factors affecting the efficiency of English learning

According to Li’s (18) research, there are difficulties in carrying out Communicative Language Teaching in some Asian countries, like China, Japan, and South Korea, where English is taught as a foreign language and in a large size of class40 to 50 students in a class. These difficulties come from the teachers’ English proficiency and burdened work, the students’ attitude, the educational system, and Communicative Language Teaching itself. From my observation, English learning in junior high schools in Taiwan encounters the same conditions. Virginia Logastro (001) indicates that language learning in a large class has difficulties in pedagogy, management-relationship, and affection, especially, the difficulties in “carrying out speaking, reading, and writing tasks… in monitoring work and giving feedback…in setting up communicative tasks …in attending to all students during class time… assessing students’ interests and moods… pair and group work often cumbersome to execute”(p.44). In Yu’s (001) research, the resistance of CLT in China is due to the concept of the teachers who doubt the effective of CLT in teaching because their students do not promote their proficiency in English. Wu (001) claimed that without qualified teachers, specialized materials, and formative assessments, it would be difficult to spread new change in English teaching in China. In my estimation, Taiwan also struggles in the similar situation.

The goal of English learning in junior high schools in Taiwan, formulated by the Ministry of Education, is to cultivate students’ communicative competence, interest of learning second language, and the knowledge of national and foreign culture. The textbook is compiled by National Institute of Compilation and Translation, which changed the materials of grammar translation into the communicative approach in17. Students are expected to learn the basic competence of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Initially, many people believed that Communicative Language Teaching promoted by the government could improve the quality of English learning in junior high schools. However, many teachers and parents begin to complain that the communicative approach neither improves students’ English competence nor contributes to their scores on the entrance examinations. This leads us considering whether Taiwan has the conditions of conducting this approach. The factors below are drawn from my teaching experience and observation in the junior high school for seventeen years.

Wu, Y. (001). English learning teaching in China trends and challenges. In Bouny Norton (Ed.), Teaching issues, Tesol In China Current challenges. TESOL Quarterly, 5(1), 11-14.

Yu, L. (001). Communicative language teaching in China progress and resistance. In Bonny Norton (Ed.), Teaching issues, Tesol in China Current challenges. TESOL Quarterly, and learning in China A case study of two Chinese students in 5(1), 14-1.

During my FSA/FLEX year, I gained lots of very useful knowledge and experience. However I consider that one of the most important things that I learned was volunteerism since I both did volunteer work in the US and learned about it in high school and in general from FSA/FLEX program. This term was new for me because volunteerism was and still is very rare in Tajikistan. People are used to work for money. I think that in order for Tajikistan to develop and resolve many problems both economical and social, people need to learn about volunteerism and do more volunteer work, especially young generation.

From the time I came back home, I wanted to do something in order to resolve at least some problems in Tajikistan that make peace in my country very fragile. I always believed that I can do many things by myself but with more people around I can achieve even more. I also realized that in order to reach my goals I need a good education which at that time was very hard to get in my city, Khujand (due to after war period). I traveled to Kyrgyzstan, in order to get admitted to American University of Kyrgyzstan. I successfully passed all the exams and received a full scholarship to study in AUK.

This year I am a senior and during my three years stay in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, I did not just study in order to reach my dreams, I tried to gain practical knowledge as well. I made close acquaintance with many Kyrgyz alumni and participated in nearly all FSA/FLEX activities held in Bishkek. I tried to come up with new ideas for fund raising, for example I proposed to bake brownies and apply pies and sale them in international organization, which actually turned out to be a good idea.

Over the past five years along with Kyrgyz alumni I frequently visited Cancer Center and Nursing home. This experience has helped me to grow greatly personally and spiritually. By participating in various Kyrgyzstan alumni projects over the past three years, I have learned many traits including leadership, respect and empathy, as well as building wonderful friendships with people of different age, nationality, religion and culture. Besides these, I have also learned valuable skills, improved by Russian, learned some Kyrgyz plus learned how to bake, cook, be an interesting speaker and good listener, improved my public speech.

Moreover this year I had a great chance to expand my knowledge about volunteer work from Turkish volunteer organization in Istanbul, Turkey called Social Volunteers Foundation (TOG). In Istanbul Bilgi University I had a great chance to attend several lectures on effective ways of attracting people for volunteer activities where I learned how to search for funds, how to satisify both volunteers and people for whom help is provided. For exampe these were the topics that we studies like awareness of individual and social responsibilities, respect to different thoughts, beliefs, ethnic origins and values, understanding of teamwork and many other very useful topics.

Also this year I have got an opportunity to take part in Tajik alumni project called Leadership Camp in Varzob. This project was very important for me because I always wanted to participate in projects held by Tajik alumni since I am planning to come back and work with Tajik children and youth. This time I have got a chance to both apply my university knowledge (because I taught a class called Conflict Resolution in Tajikistan) and practical knowledge of working with children since during my volunteer work in Cancer Center, I learn how to interact with children closely, I successfully applied this experience in Leadership Camp in Varzob. I had a great and very useful time during this project because it was one of my first step towards fulfillment of my dream.

I think that I gained quite lots of knowledge, which I could share in the Summit in Kiev both practical and theoretical. I think I am very close to my main dream, which is to open an NGO in Tajikistan and involve youth of Tajikistan in volunteer work. I already contacted with TOG-volunteer organization in Turkey about lending me a helping hand for beginning. I think that Summit in Kiev could also greatly help me to expand my knowledge even more about volunteer activities of alumni from all over Euroasia. To hear about their successful projects, way of doing these projects. For example Leadership Camp in Varzob was a project borrowed from Kyrgyzstan alumni, also called Leadership Camp where I also had a chance to participate. So I strongly believe that successful projects should be borrowed and applied in different states. This is one of the main reasons why I am so eager to take part in Summit since this Summit can give me an opportunity to intact with alumni from different states and listen to their projects and volunteer experiences. I am also very eager to share all the knowledge I have gained, which I think could be also very useful for the participants.

I went to shoot pool after classes today. Thank god for that no smoking law, the air at the pool hall was actually clear and when I got home, my hair and clothes didnt smell like cigarette smoke. Glad I went, what a stress reliever. It’s been such a long time since I had some fun. The guys were all hilarious. We were all acting so silly. We decided to mark our arms with the blue chalk to show who won the most games. I had 5 blue marks on my arm.

Afterwards, we all went to have Shanghai food at this new restaurant in Chinatown. The food was good, especially the xiao long bao. The soup in the dumpling was so good, and adding the vinaigrette and hot sauce just added a whole new level to my eating experience. We chatted for a long time but the service was bad. Before we were done eating, the waitress brought the check to our table. And as soon as our plates were empty, they cleared the table. I couldnt even finish my hot tea. So rude. They really wanted to get rid of us. Oh well, Id still go back for the food; Ill just make sure its on a less busy night.

Recently finished a fantasy book and it’s really got me thinking about life. The book was about how seven worlds were in danger of being destroyed because of an imbalance caused by a human. A druid brought the human from the Seventh World (Earth) to the Fourth world (the pivotal center of all seven worlds). In the book, all religion was false and created by ignorant men who wanted to gain power and the appearance of knowledge. The human, who still believed in his religion, was crusading against the people of the Fourth World, who he believed were sinners and demons.

I’ve been thinking if god was truly created through the minds of human beings, what are we that exist on the planet Earth. Is it possible that all religion is false? What were the gods of the Egyptians, Greeks, Celts and other ancient civilizations? The gods were worshipped and prayed to, until the explorations of the human mind and science discarded them as pagan and irrational. Can the same state of mind and the same science discard Christianity, Judaism and other religions of the modern world? If there is no god,

The future Superpests, superweeds, and mutated organisms will be created.

These facts illustrate during the past decade, the largest experiment in human history has begun with humans as the guinea pigs and the world’s ecological system as the test site (Torr 11). Despite the few positive effects from the making and growing of genetically modified foods, these foods are harmful to human health and society.

To assess the damages that genetically modified (GM) foods pose to the world, people need to familiarize themselves with what genetically modifying food is. To genetically engineer something, scientists have to change the DNA of the living organism through various “genetic surgery” laboratory techniques. All organisms have genes, made up of DNA, which is the blueprint for everything in the living organism. Recently engineers in molecular biology have figured out ways to cut and rejoin strands of DNA using enzymes. Scientists have also learned that the only way to change the cells is to attach the enzymes to highly infectious viruses. The virus inserts itself into the cell, which incorporates the enzyme into the strands of DNA. The cell starts to copy the enzyme and at times the virus, thus infecting the DNA and changing the cells of the organism (Genetic). This may sound exciting at first, but closer examination exposes that politics and money are taking priority over potential dangers. The irony is that the world already has the ability to feed the world’s population without the need of high-yielding GM foods. Also, scientists have the ability to change the traits of organisms through a natural modification procedure. One way is through selective breeding, which has the same outcome as genetic engineering. In selective breeding the desired trait of the plant or animal is bred and hopefully passed into its offspring. Another way to duplicate the genetic approach is through grafting, a process whereby the trunk or branches of a plant well suited for growing in a climate but vulnerable to pests and disease can be cut off. The trunk or branch can then be attached to a plant where conditions aren’t always right, and the disease or pests are unknown (Cobb 18+). Time and effort are the only drawbacks to these processes. In genetics there are countless side effects such as the use of highly infectious viruses and gene mutations leading to toxins or allergens.

Although high risks are taken by geneticists to achieve their goals, there are a few possible needs for GM foods. One is that the human population is growing at an astonishing rate. Therefore, the agriculture land once used for farming is now being developed in order to house the growing population. Genetically engineering crops and food comes into play when farmers can grow foods in less then ideal conditions and create crops with higher yields in less time. Another factor is that scientists can create foods with longer shelf life. This means that they can be picked, shipped, and distributed without the worry of them spoiling before retail sale. One example of this is the Flavr Savr tomatoes created a few years ago. Scientists learned how to turn off the genes that created the rotting problem after the tomato is picked. Instead they can be picked green, and then transported, allowing the tomatoes to ripen and stay ripe for up to 10 days plenty of time for sale in any rural market (Keynes). Pests and disease are one more reason that GM foods are produced. They have inserted a gene into most agriculture crops that produces its own pest control agent, eliminating the need for spraying.

The answers to these needs are not solved without the concern for the well being of the world. These feasible solutions to our problems have many negative results. The Flavr Savr tomato was injected with a gene to adjust its normal function. There is no way to tell if the gene, virus, or enzyme will eventually have the same effects when inserted into a totally unrelated species. Most likely, these changed genes (proteins) would prove safe for human consumption (Emmerson 5). Many of those crops that can create their own pesticides actually produce hundreds of times more toxins per acre than does an application of the same toxin sprayed directly on the plants.

Genetic manipulation can increase the chances that the plants will develop toxic or allergy-causing compounds. This leads to the harmful effects of GM foods on the human society. Therefore, it should be the obligation of experts to examine the GM foods before making them available to the public in order to avoid harmful effects. For example, when some people who are allergic to peanuts eat GM products such as tomatoes (which were injected with similar peanut genes) they are affected by the allergens of the peanut from the tomato.

This problem leads to the most widely debated issue over GM foods, the need for labeling. Labeling is vital to food-allergic individuals, who need to know when their purchases are potentially dangerous. Since most GM foods are indistinguishable in appearance from non-GM foods, most consumers will not know what they are buying. The FDA tries to cover up as many GM foods as they can. They follow the regulations but twist the moral issues. Existing FDA regulations mandate that companies label sweeteners added to canned vegetables by conventional methods. Yet the sweeteners added to the vegetables by genetic engineering do not have to be labeled. Another topic that the FDA has pushed aside is the labeling of animal genes added to plants used as food. Most religious individuals, who follow strict dietary laws, have seen no steps taken to accommodate their beliefs and restrictions (Torr 150+).

With the increased use of GM field crops, the environment is subject to genetic pollution. There are countless ways that pollen can be carried, thus inflicting turmoil between organic farmers and genetic farmers. Birds, bees, insects, wind and rain carry the GM-pollen across acres of fields and mixes the pollen with organic plants. Environmentalists are considering an “allowable limit” of genetic pollution of non-GM foods. They have to set up a limit because it can’t be stopped or controlled. Once these crops are grown and released into the ecosystem, it is impossible for them to be cleaned up or recalled to the labs. All genetic mutations will eventually be passed to future generations of plants (Cummins).

For the most part, the information about GM foods has a positive affect on society. This is partly because the biotechnology revolution is occurring before our eyes, and the number of commercially successful products is still quite small. However, the number of genetically modified foods reaching our plate is on the rise, and before eating, consumers should take a brief look at the already proven and likely hazards of GM foods. The issue of genetic modification technology and its use in food production is a sensitive and controversial topic. Public debate should be encouraged to enable an understanding between the organic and inorganic consumers.

After Junior High all I thought about was getting high school over with and graduating. Even though thinking about starting high school kind of made me sick to my stomach and scared me a bit. I just kept on thinking new experiences around the corner, and new people to meet and greet. Just thinking that I was the top dog for being in high school with all the older kids made me feel somewhat important or privileged.

High school was less nerve wrecking than I actually thought it was before I started, besides getting lost in the big crowds of people. High school was tough for me from making new friends to turning in homework on time. It wasn’t all that easy to balance and set a schedule to get things done, which meant cutting down fun time. But at the same time everything flew by so fast that it was senior year and it was time to graduate.

The though that high school was over meant is when you actually start trying to go or do something with your life. No more fun and games, after high school its all uphill from now by trying to work on a successful career and going to college if that’s what you want to do. You think that high school was so hard yet you have so much more to go after it if you want to succeed.

Its graduation day and you finally realize that this will be the last time that you see everyone together like this. All you feel is emotions flying everywhere in the air from yourself, friends, and family. This is it and you finally get to step in to the real world. Walking across that stage getting my diploma and shaking everyone’s hand just wanted to make me to break down and cry because I myself have went threw all the way to achieve what I have all by myself. This had to be one of the greatest moments in my life. I will never forget walking across that stage and knowing that I did it.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet can be seen as an exploration of the human psyche in the consequences our actions have when acted on out of impulse and emotion rather than careful deliberation. Hamlet the character makes most of his decisions on the spot but has trouble deciding one way or another after thorough consideration. Many of the decisions he does make have implications that result in dire consequences for him and other characters in the play.

The character Hamlet’s actions are driven by his emotion, but usually thinks rationally, before making decisions on how to act. Throughout the play, we see Hamlet faced with unimaginable stress and decisions to make but is able to think pragmatically and follow his conscience. He debates how he can do the right thing, yet avenge the terrors inflicted on his father. However, it is when Hamlet acts spontaneously that his decisions and actions seem reckless and negligent.

Many critics through the years have debated about Hamlet’s emotions none more so than T. S. Eliot. In his essay, Hamlet and His Problems he argued that Shakespeare was unable to express the feelings Hamlet felt because Shakespeare himself did not understand them. Eliot believes Shakespeare did not use ‘objective correlative’ which is a series of events or objects that rouse a specific emotion of a character. According to Eliot, the play is interpreted emotionally in different ways because Shakespeare did not know how to properly express the emotion of Hamlet. This however, neglects the fact that Hamlet acts mainly out of emotion and passion.

Hamlet’s emotions throughout the play are often difficult to determine. During his soliloquies, the audience is somewhat informed of Hamlet’s inner struggles and problems yet some of his actions seem rather contrasted to what he has been saying in his soliloquies. Hamlet is dominantly seen as being very melancholy since learning about his father’s death, greatly troubled by the incestuous behaviour of his mother and enraged at the gall of his uncle.

However, as the play progresses, Hamlet tells Horatio and the audience that he is feigning madness and this line between acting mad and being genuinely insane is somewhat indistinct. This makes it difficult for the audience to effectively decipher the true feelings of the protagonist as we are unsure of Hamlet’s madness and the fact he tries to hide his true emotion through this supposed madness.

Eliot in his critical essay, Hamlet and hid Problems, believes Hamlet’s madness is rather a “form of emotional relief” which Shakespeare “cannot express in art.” Eliot believes the madness of Hamlet is not a way in which Hamlet is able investigate the truth to the murder of his father and the revenge on his uncle but because there is no other way Shakespeare can express the desired effect of Hamlet’s emotion.

Through his soliloquies we hear of his dilemmas and the way he feels, not knowing what is ahead of him. His emotions are expressed as the reader is taken into the protagonist’s mind in the soliloquies and the audience hears of his indecision and uncertainty

HAMLET “Yet I,

A dull and muddy-mettled rascal, peak,

Like John-a-dreams, unpregnant of my cause,

And can say nothing; no, not for a king,

Upon whose property and most dear life

A damnd defeat was made. Am I a coward?”

This is part of Hamlet’s second soliloquy and he makes mention of his inability to act on his father’s wishes. He is “unpregnant of his cause,” that is, unable to act quickly on his call. He later likens himself to a coward. This is all because Hamlet as a character can not be sure of the ghost’s intentions and realises this as he goes through it in his mind.

In contrast to this, Hamlet is unable to altogether think logically when faced by the antagonist. Instead, his thoughts and actions are hasty and irrational. Here, Hamlet finds another reason to prolong his action, as he does not want to kill his uncle when his soul is clean

HAMLET And now Ill dot. And so he goes to heaven;

And so am I revenged. That would be scannd

A villain kills my father; and for that,

I, his sole son, do this same villain send

To heaven.

Hamlet has surpassed the idea simply having to know the facts of the murder that took place, but now feels the need to know the metaphysical details too before he acts. This can be seen as Hamlet not really wanting to go through with the murder as it is against his better judgement yet feels he is obliged to act on his father’s demand of wergild.

In the very next scene, however, we see Hamlet act differently to what the audience has seen him say and think by killing in hot-blood who he thinks to be the king. Here, he makes his decision in the heat of the moment without investigating or thinking what he is doing

HAMLET How now? A rat? Dead for a ducat, dead!…

Nay I know not. Is it the king?

Here, Hamlet makes a pivotal decision in the play. He believes that the person behind the arras is the king and acts immediately by killing Polonius. This is one of the first decisions Hamlet makes; one which has consequences that affect many of the characters in the play. The decision to kill whoever was behind the arras had no logical reasoning behind it. As a result of this Hamlet is pursued by the king, a friend of Polonius’ and Laertes, his son.

This spontaneous decision brings about the chain of events that ultimately brings about the restoration of peace and order in the state of Denmark. The sudden death of Polonius provides a means for Claudius to get rid of Hamlet, through the battle between Laertes and Hamlet. Claudius tells Laertes about Hamlet’s actions and pushes for a battle in which Laertes will be able to exact revenge for the killing of his father. The battle ends with not only Hamlet but Laertes, Claudius and Gertrude dead. Before dying, however, Hamlet passes on the kingship of the country to young Fortinbras, which means the country is reestablished without the corruption and immorality of the previous rulers.

HAMLET But I do prophesy the election lights

On Fortinbras he has my dying voice;

So tell him, with th’occurrents, more and less,

Which have solicited. The rest is silence.

Hamlet knowing he is dying realises that Fortinbras is the one who will bring prosperity and morality back to the Danish people. Finally all corruption and debauchery have been eliminated from the Danish crown.

The only other major instance where Hamlet acted on impulse and emotion was near the beginning of the play where Hamlet first meets the ghost. We have the ghost appearing clad in full armour in the middle of the night. He is seen as a very foreboding figure and does not talk to anyone for the first three nights. On the fourth, Hamlet this time joining the group, is beckoned away by the ghost, and Hamlet obliges. As Horatio, the scholar points out this is potentially very dangerous situation

HORATIO What if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord,

Or to the dreadful summit of the cliff

That beetles o’er his base into the sea,

And there assume some other, horrible form,

Which might deprive your sovereignty of reason

And draw you into madness?

Horatio verifies the existence of a ghost, as he is an intelligent being. This also means that advice given is valid. Hamlet puts himself in grave jeopardy by following the ghost not knowing where it is from, whether it is his father or an equivocal demon from hell. His emotions of yearning for his father take over and Hamlet feels drawn to know what the ghost has to say.

Hamlet never knows for certain the truth about his father’s death and only late in the play do the audience hear a confession for the regicidal murder. Nevertheless Hamlet follows the ghosts demand for wergild, exacting revenge on his father’s killer.

Hamlet’s emotion and motives have been questioned by many especially in the last century. T.S. Eliot believes Hamlet’s is an “artistic failure” and his emotions were unable to be expressed, as Shakespeare himself did not completely understand them. However, it is through Hamlet’s emotions that he is able to act, although, his actions often leave much to be desired.

Hamlet’s true emotions are often difficult to interpret as he often tries to hide his genuine feelings especially through his supposedly fictitious madness. However, at times it is clear to see Hamlet as a young man who is troubled by recent events and his conscience. Through Shakespeare’s use of soliloquies, the audience usually gets a clear insight into the psyche of Hamlet, but on some occasions, these sagacious thoughts are overcome by emotion and calenture. These emotional and impulsive decisions often result in dire consequences for all involved, and the ultimate price is paid by Hamlet and his corrupted family.
