HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology on the whole deals with the nature of the mind and mental processes. Questions concerning these factors first came about from ancient Greek philosophers, the most famous being Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, during the forth and fifth centuries B.C. Hippocrates, was a Greek physician, frequently called the “father of medicine.” He was especially interested in the study of the living organism and its parts. He observed how the brain controlled various parts of the body. This gave rise to the biological perspective of psychology. Today, all new physicians reflect upon Hippocrates’s medical ethics for their study.

Following the Greek philosophers, around the 17th century, one of the discussions of human psychology was whether or not human beings are born with knowledge and understanding of reality, or are they acquired through experiences and interactions with the world. The view that we are born with existing knowledge is called the nativist view. The view that knowledge is gained through experiences is called the empiricist view. An English philosopher called John Locke, put forward a theory that at birth, the mind is at a blank slate, or tabula rasa, onto which experiences of what he/she sees, hears, smells, tastes and feels are written. In other words, there is no store of knowledge, but through our senses, our knowledge comes. Today it is still questionable and it is referred to as the nature versus nurture debate in psychology. It centres around the fact that biological processes affect our emotions and behaviour, but also acknowledges that experiences can also affect our behaviour.

In 187, a man called Wilhelm Wundt (18-10) was considered by some to be the founder of modern psychology. Wundt was the leader of the school of structuralism, which contended that psychology is human experiences studied from the point of view of the person doing the experiencing. In other words, it was Wundt’s belief that the mind and behaviour can be subject to scientific analysis. Introspection and self-exploration are stressed. Introspection is referred to as the observations and recording of the nature of one’s own perceptions, thoughts and feelings. Structuralists in general, believed in the separation of mind and body, without interaction, but conceived of in such a way that a parallel structure is formed. For each conscious experience of the mind, a corresponding reaction occurs in the body. It must be remembered that the mind does not cause physical reactions any more than the body alters states of consciousness.

William James (184-110) brought about a new approach to psychology called functionalism. This refers to studying how the mind works so that an organism can adapt to and function in its environment. James established the first psychology laboratory in America. In the field of psychology, he is best known for his work, Principles of Psychology (180), and his “stream-of-consciousness” belief that mentality must be seen as an ongoing process and not fragmented into bits of consciousness. James held that an emotion is evidenced by the internal conflict that arises from a person’s reaction to a particular emotional situation. Out of this theory grew his legendary argument that a man meeting a bear in the woods does not run because he is afraid, but rather is afraid because he runs. It is running itself that initiates the reaction of fear, which produces the emotion.

Watson John Broadus (1878-158) was an American psychologist in favour of militant behaviourism. He says psychology is the ‘science of behaviour’. He believed human responses could be predicted by

• Observation

• Conditioned reflexes

• Verbal methods

• Testing

His studies of children and animals were innovative because structuralism and functionalists had virtually neglected these two groups. He worked on the conditioning of childhood fears and his advances with animals opened the way to the development of comparative psychology.

Around 11, while behaviourism was appearing in the United States, Gestalt psychology was appearing in Germany. Gestalt being German for ‘form’ or ‘configuration.’ This approach was favoured by Max Wertheimer and basically contends that the psychological make-up of an individual is based on the unity and wholeness of behaviour, combined with experiences. In other words, Gestalt psychology is based on the concepts of unity and wholeness.

At the turn of the 0th century, psychoanalysis emerged. It originated from Sigmund Freud (156-1). His approach was based mainly on the unconscious, that is, the thoughts, attitudes, impulses, wishes, motivations and emotions which we are unaware of. Freud believed that these thoughts and feelings which we are forbidden of, leave our conscious state and enter the unconscious, but still continue to influence our thoughts and feelings. He says that these unconscious impulses are expressed in our dreams and physical mannerisms. Psychoanalysis is a psychological method that seeks the basis for human behaviour and motivation in the unconscious mind.

The first reading I chose for my reading response project was Kari Wiederkehr¡¯s short story entitled ¡°Bear Necessities¡±. I hardly understand the meaning of the title, but I thought it will be an interesting story, so I decided to read over the story.

In this story, Kari Wiederkehr describes how a black bear changed a man¡¯s attitude to his life. Douglas, the protagonist of the story, had extremely bad mood and went out for jog because of the changing of his wife. After he risked a bear in the forest, all trouble in his life had disappeared, and Douglas thought he could not be angry with his wife because she was the most important in his life.

When I finished this story, the first point appeared in my mind was that we had better be satisfied with what we have now. I do not have the experience like Douglas, but I saw many similar circumstances in some movies. Most of the protagonists in these movies realized the importance of their wives, children, or families until they were on the edge of life. Of course, not everyone was as lucky as Douglas who can continue to enjoy his life which had been changed in his mind. I think this kind of situation can often happen in our real lives, but may not be related to the life. For example, I looked forward to entering the best high school in my city; however, I failed the test the school gave since I did not concentrate on the exam practices. I was regretful but I had no second time. The only choice for me was to the regular school. The only view I want to say through my own sample is do not wait until everything is too late.

From this story, I found I have the same thought as Douglas¡¯s wife, and that is ¡°change is inevitable.¡± The world, the society and the life are developing fast now, so I can not stick one thing in a certain way all the time. What I should do is to learn to accept the new methods and products, so I will not always complain and miss something essential. The story enlightened me that regret is not a good prescription in my study life, work life, or family life. The key is to do my best what I can do.

The play, Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, used a narrative technique called stream of consciousness. Willy Loman, the main character, was the one who the technique relates to because he looks to the past for the answers to his problems. Throughout the play there are many instances of symbolism and themes with the main point being how a person defines success for themselves. Willy is somewhat crazy with the morals he lives by and has a hard time stepping into reality. His goals leading to success seem too far to grab and he bestows his hopes along with fears onto his family. Willy is fundamentally confused in his assessment of himself as a salesman, father, and husband.

The first instance that relates to Willy’s confusion is his career as a salesman. Willy has a big ego and tells himself and everyone else about how he is very well liked and vital in New England. Outsiders would notice the nonsense that came out of his mouth, such as Bernard and Charley, but couldn’t do a thing about it. Willy would declare, “Be liked and you will never want. You take me, for instance. I never have to wait in line to see a buyer.”() His attitude changed frequently and the next minute he’d take that step into reality, if only for a moment he would realize what his life had become. “You know, the trouble is, Linda, people don’t take to me… I know it when I walk in. They seem to laugh at me.”(6) This clearly shows Willy’s confusion in his assessment of himself as a salesman.

Willy has two sons, Biff and Happy, and Biff is the more favored son, in fact Happy is barely ever noticed by Willy. Willy always conveyed his ideas to Biff hoping he would follow in his dreams. He would sell his own son his lines of what he believed true, although were not. Willy would say it was okay to steal and if you’re very well-liked and good looking you’re set in life. In Willy’s misconception of who he is and what he’s done he proclaims, “I never in my life told him anything but decent things.”(41) After Biff has failed in life and finds out his father is cheating on his wife, therefore a liar, he can’t take it anymore. Willy only wants the best for his son and Biff only want the best for his father. Many awkward situations come after they’ve grown up and Biff decides to confront Willy on his wrong judgment of life. “And I never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air I could never stand taking orders from anybody!”(11) Being a father was something Willy was confused about but yearned to be the best.

Linda, Willy’s wife is another big part of his life and link to his mental tribulations. She loves Willy dearly and is compassionate towards him and his feelings. Willy deep down loves her but doesn’t seem to appreciate all her doings. He wants a perfect life with a perfect family and tells Linda he’s going to get it someday. “You wait kid, before it’s all over we’re gonna get a little place out in the country, and I’ll raise some vegetables, a couple of chickens…” (7) Vegetables are significant because Willy wants to plant something to watch it grow. In one of Willy’s flashbacks he’s in a hotel room with a different woman. This proves Willy is phony and when Biff goes there and catches him it’s still hard for him to realize what he’s done. “What’s the matter? She’s a buyer. Buys for J.H. Simmons. She lives down the hall-… She’s nothing to me Biff. I was lonely, I was terribly lonely.”(10) All aspects of Willy’s life are confused and this shows his marriage being affected.

In conclusion, Willy’s life is an array of mixed emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Willy begins to understand that life is about love and family but he’s still confused with the money issue. This consideration appears relevant at the end of the play when Willy proceeds to commit suicide for a $0,000 proposition. He kept saying that the woods are burning, a theme meaning that life was closing in on him. Biff didn’t want for that to happen but understood why and used knowledge to live the rest of his life, while Happy, never understanding or caring, had all his father’s bad habits and was just living through him. Willy only wanted success but with his mental confusion was too difficult and led to failure.

A&P

I thought the A&P was a pretty good story. It took me back to the way I used to feel about my summer job a couple of summers ago. In this story you can see that Sammy was sick of his job and was either going to get fired or quit. He eventually quit before he got fired on the spare of the moment trying to impress the girls which two of them he put down the whole story

In this story Sammy is like a male chauvinist. It doesn’t seem like he has much respect for all women because he had funny nicknames for all of the girls just about as soon as the entered the A&P. The first was nicknamed Plaid “a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can.” The second girl he nicknamed Big Tall Goony-Goony. She was described as “one of those chubby berry-faces, a tall girl, and a chin that was too long.” He claimed that “she was the kind of girl other girls think is very striking and attractive but never quite makes its.” The last girl he described was the main girl that he liked. So atleast he doesn’t completely dislike women. He nicknamed her “Queenie”

“She wasn’t quite as tall, she had sort of oaky hair that the sun and salt had bealched, done up in a bun that was unraveling, and kind of a prim face.

In this story I got the idea this was around the place and time that the younger generation started going against the social standards. For example, Queenie came in her bathing suit with the straps down. He even said she was bold for that. “I suppose it’s the only face you can have.” Speaking of her prim face. Even Sammy just up and quit the A&P on the spare of the moment. I might have seemed like he was planning this or it was just the perfect setting for him. “One advantage to this scene taking place in the summer, I can follow this up with a clean exit, there’s no fumbling around getting your coat and galoshes.” He clearly was ready to quit at anytime but it was just perfect to him quit right there. He wanted to feel like hero saying “I quit” quick enough for them to her him “hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero.”

After quiting Sammy had some second thoughts but thought to himself “It seems to me that once you begin a gesture it’s fatal not to go through with it.”

The A&P was a great story that was giving a basic thought process of just about all males. Even though this story took place before I was born I can relate now to what Sammy was thinking 0 years ago. He might not even have disliked women as I stated in the beginning of this paper. He could have just been bored and was thinking what any other male in his position would have, its not like he said these things out loud. So maybe Sammy wasn’t as bad as the story kind of made him look.

Please note that this sample paper on A&P is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. SCIENCE OF MOTOR LEARNING

Identifying and Measuring Target Behaviours Indicative of Positive Near Transfer.

1.

Description of skill

Cheap Custom Essays on identifying and measuring target behaviours

essay writing service

The skill I have chosen to look at is the underarm serve in the game of volleyball.

Goal of the movement

The main goal of the server is to consistently serve the ball into the opponent’s court as often as possible. Also being accurate and hitting with varied amounts of power are important in a good volleyball serve.

Basic action required

There are three main actions in the volleyball serve, the preparation, execution and follow through. In the preparation phase, the ball should be at waist level, shoulders square to net and eyes on the ball. The execution requires the person to allow the ball to drop before swinging the arm, weight transfer with ball contact and the ball should be contacted just below the centre back heel of the hand. In the follow through phase the athlete should move smoothly onto the court, they should allow the arm swing and weight transfer to carry them into a ready defensive position and finally the player should be prepared for the next play.

.

Description of the learner

The learner is a year 10 student at a private boys school.

Previous experience

Besides playing at school the student has had no previous experience outside the school setup.

Relevant underlying abilities

The student has many of the underlying abilities involved in volley ball he is quick and mobile and has a football background, this will directly help with the volleyball serve as it is closely related to the handball in the game of football. The student also seems to have good hand eye co-ordination and doesn’t seem to miss the ball to much.

.

Discussion of the target context

The target context for this learner in the school gym. Three courts are set up next to each other and students all practice their serves within the three courts. The student only has approx - meters between the end line and the wall. This is the area he must serve in. Students who are not participating, either are sitting down around the gym or helping with other activities.

4.

Description of the target beaviours and performance measures.

First Behaviour Getting the ball over the net.

Measure This could be easily measure by the amount of times the student can get the ball over the net.

Second behaviour Accuracy of the serve

Measure This can be measured by placing objects on the other side of the court and getting the student to serve the ball aiming for the object. You can also use people, standing in the correct volleyball formation and getting the student to call out a name and serve to that person.

Third Behaviour Power and action on the ball.

Measure For a person to serve with power they must put action on the ball (topspin) this can be measured by seeing how many times the student, hitting the ball with power can get the ball in on the other side of the court. If the student just hits the ball with power the likely outcome is that it will go dramatically past the base line and be deemed out.

Sophocles’s “Oedipus Rex” and Shaffer’s “Equus,” both share similar elements that show how the characters own free will, brought about their pain and suffering. Both plays share elements such as the physical blinding, the character’s choice of life, and the search for truth. In “Equus,” the idea of what is normal is explored where the capacity for worship, passion, and pain is lost in modern society. It dramatizes a child breaking free from restrictions placed by society and establishing his individuality and freedom.

Both plays use the movement of the past to discover the truth and in “Equus,” the understanding of the character.

“Oedipus Rex” like “Equus,” is a detective story. Oedipus throughout the entire play searches for the criminal that killed King Laius. In the same way, Dysart, a child psychiatrist, is in search for why his patient, Alan, has stabbed the eyes of six horses. In “Equus” the story of the crime is revealed little by little, unlike Oedipus where we know the truth from the beginning.

Both Oedipus and Alan choose their own way of life. Oedipus knowing that his fate was to someday kill his father and marry his mother, decides to leave Corinth; not knowing that Polybus was not his real father. In his travels, he gets caught up in a violent argument and kills one of his attackers. He remains oblivious to the tragic irony, that he has slain Laius, his true father. In Thebes, Oedipus solved the riddle of the sphinx and becomes king. Alan unlike Oedipus does not leave his parents completely but he leaves what his parents believe and establishes his own religion. He takes what his mother taught him about religion and instead of Jesus being his savior, it is Equus.

so then...a little reflection? heres to looking in the mirror.

skins kinda chard black..if i scratch my nose the skin would fall away and youd bare witness to my bones...not so sure im comfy with that. hindsight tells me to take my exposed skin out of the fire, but when u feel cold, ud give anything to burn.

this is all i think it means. 1+1 = simple enough. weve been taught it from the get go. but lets go beyond face value here. the trick is to eliminate the equation all together and just be one. its a long hard road to get there....building love between two is not as simple as boy meets girl, but true love is melting into the other person...and making an entity, building your own little empire....independence is bred in all of us. the jealous little brother who hates the newborn baby so much that it tries so hard for all the attention....and sometimes...independence gets its way. young love crumbles. ill say here and now ive always felt that the best way to find ones self is to be in love, the i have to find myself notion is noble as old hell, but does that necessarily mean that that has to be done alone? after sitting here for an hour thinking about it, i dont think so.

ive learned something from every single relationship ive ever embarked on...always something new about myself...and i learn things on my own too....dont get me wrong there, depending on love is dangerous. but, were conditioned to think of it as the be all end all of human existance, its used as a crutch, its used against people, sex disguises itself as love...the very notion of it is so versitaile that no wonder we freak over it. its one stop shopping for all your smiley little needs.

my journey of solo self discovery has yielded some interesting things. getting damn good at a day to day routine weekwise...relaxing for two days weekends. i miss companionship sure, but my mind is so set on whats now, that any sort of thought of summoning up the love gods just seems tiring.......but theres always that spark...and wonderment at the back of my mind...who will it be? when will it happen again. the whole point here is....we think we control it. we dont. no matter how independent or immune we think we are as single hard nosed twentysomethings i just want u all to bathe in the humility that is this sooner or later, love will stop us dead in our tracks...and all of a sudden...ure sucked in. the whiplash u get is from your futile attempt to pull the emergency brake. ouch. put some ice on that champ. it will find u. and be not afraid.

so many questions...and for the first time, my love and convictions just cant cut it....time to pull the curtain back....p-r-i-v-a-c-y....its priceless to me.

Washington D.C. on September 11th, which caused the deaths of many, has changed

the American psychic forever. Terrorism is an issue that is on the minds of all

Americans because it is now a realistic threat.

The psychological factors aren’t the only damage caused by the horrific events

of September 11th. It has also caused damage to the United States economy. Before

the attacks, the economy was the starting to slow down. Consumer spending was

decelerating in 001. Production was also beginning to slow down. But, the slow

down was part of a natural process of the business cycle. This would have eventually

led to plenty of growth. The stock market was also taking a beating. Stocks were going

down considerably.

Consumer spending starting to increase from mid year right through August

001. There were also hints that industrial production might have soon stopped falling.

In early August and early September surveys by the National Association of Purchasing

Management, more manufactures reported increases in orders than decreases. The

September 11th Attacks “came at a time of weakness in the economy and the

subsequent economic shock these events caused compounded the uncertainty that

was already widely felt and moved our economy into uncharted waters.” 1

The airline industry has suffered the most after September 11th. The airline

industry is in serious trouble and there is no let up in sight. Consumers have developed

a fear of flying, fearing a repeat of September 11 or something even more horrific.

Therefore, consumer purchasing of airline tickets has fallen drastically. This has lead

to many layoffs. The Government gave the airlines $15 billion in governmental

assistance. Despite the governments help, Reportedly, between September and the

end of December 001 114,711 people were laid off in the airline industry. US Airways

filed for bankruptcy in August 00 and United Airlines filed for bankruptcy this year.

American Airlines has asked its employees to take a pay freeze next year. American

Airlines also says pay cuts will most likely occur in 004. “Passenger traffic and ticket

prices have fallen sharply, resulting in bankruptcy filings by US Airway and United

Airlines, industry wide losses of $ billion in 00.”

The insurance industry has also suffered a great deal from the September 11th

attacks. The insurers had to cover the loses from the attacks, which have surpassed two

billion dollars. Demand for insurance has increased considerably because of

anticipation of additional terror attacks. But, because of the high damages, insurance

companies had to pay out, they are continuously raising their prices. “ The price hikes

are passed along to other companies, to governments, and ultimately to the individual

taxpayer and consumer.” Food and other basic consumer items will also become more

expensive as freight insurance costs increase.

These figures are sobering enough, but they reflect only an immediate and

short term cost perspectives. Unfortunately, the economy is still being damaged due to

the knowledge among economic producers and consumers that another attack could

come at any time and have even more serious consequences. This uncertainty has had

serious ripple effect throughout the entire American economy because of lingering fears

of another terrorist incident. “The ripple effect of layoffs, caused by businesses and laid-

off workers cutting back on spending for goods and services, will be felt in other sectors

of the economy including manufacturing, construction, and a number of services

industries.” 4

Immediately following the September 11th attacks there was a huge drop in

consumer spending across the United States. Spending patterns shifted from luxury

products to basic, everyday goods. In September 001, retail sales fell by $6 billion (.1

percent) ; durable goods new orders fell $11.6 billion (6.8 percent); But there was a

huge increase in demand for U.S. flags after September 11th. This actual gave the

global economy a lift. The domestic manufactures were not able to keep up with the

increasing consumer demand, therefore they had to depend on Chinese factories to

help in the production of flags. There were 51.7 million flag imports in 001. As

more time has passed since the September 11th attacks have occurred, consumer

spending is returning to more of a normal pace.

Following the attacks, production output had dropped drastically. However,

production fell 1 percent in September. This level of output was low for a while, “ but as

damaged homes and factories are rebuilt and damaged furnishings and equipment are replaced, output growth is elevated. The economy will soon be back on it’s pre-disaster path.” 5

In many was, this potential nightmare, cause by September 11th, has done more damage to the American economy than the actual destruction of its economic aftermath. Because what might happen next, Americans are afraid to fly on the airlines, travel to New York or Washington D.C., invest in the stock market, buy new home, or spend any of their savings on big ticket consumer items.

This psychological aspect of September 11 is doubly damaging, for not only does it harm the economy today, it harms the economy for the foreseeable future. It generates a chain of reaction of damage, for when consumers don’t spend due to fears of terrorist attacks, other consumers who work in retail travel, service, transportation, and a variety

of other industries lose their jobs. Subsequently, they can’t spend any money either and

5 Evan F. Koenig, Down But Not out The U.S. Economy After September 11, (Dallas, TX, 001, accessed 1 May 00); available from http//www.dallas.fed.org/htm/

research/vita/koenigvita.html

of other industries lose their jobs. Subsequently, they can’t spend any money either and

the economy suffers even more.

The airline, restaurant, travel, accommodation, tourism, postal services, and insurance industries are particularly vulnerable to increased terrorism risks. Regions of the country and economies where these industries are concentrated are likely to suffer the most from output and employment falls due to the September 11th attacks. Responses by the airline, tourism, and hotel industries involving discounting in order to attract travelers have not proven very effective, for such incentives reduce the return on capital and undermine future investment.

In macroeconomic terms, according to a number of leading economic forecasters, the events of September 11 will lower America’s annual gross domestic product, the widest measure of economic output, by at least two percent from what it otherwise would have been. And because a nation’s economic output is roughly equal to its income, which would work out to about two-hundred billion dollars, which works out to about two-thousand dollars on average for every American household, not only this year but also for several years into the future. Americans will be paying for September 11th for many years yet, and many of the losses that have already been incurred can’t ever be made up.

Leading economic experts estimate that the September 11th attacks destroyed at least fifty billion dollars in physical assets in New York City and Washington D.C. Increased security measures and reduced tax revenue from high post September 11 layoffs have caused the debt levels of the state and federal governments to rise by more than one-hundred billion dollars from what they would have been as a result of additional spending financed by borrowing.

When one considers all of the direct and secondary economic effects of the terrorist attack, including the impact on corporate and household finances, the short term damage done to the American economy is in the tens of billions of dollars. When one projects lost productivity, sales, jobs, revenues, and other related economic consequences, “the estimated costs of September 11th attacks to the national economy ranged from about $170 billion to almost $50 billion.” 6

In examining the effects of September 11th in the long term, things look a lot more promising. Economists says there are several important stimulus that should make economic activity rebound. First, the federal reserve cut short- term interest rates. Also, the major tax reduction which is occurring, including the tax rebates which were giving out, the emergency spending bill enacted just after the attacks, and the fiscal stimulus bill. These programs add up to a major amount of stimulus- perhaps around $160 billion in fiscal year 00. Also, energy prices have declined this year. This price of imported oil has fallen by nearly half since last November, and the price of natural gas has fallen even more dramatically. These prices declines give firms and households more purchasing power, and they should help stimulate demand. The “over hang” of capital equipment and software, as well as inventories, that I mentioned earlier is one that will correct itself with time. At some point, the stocks of these assets will get too low

enough levels that firms will need to start spending on them again. 7

6 Donald H. Rumsfeld, Transcript of Testimony at Defense Subcommittee of Senate Appropriations, 1 May 00, Washington D.C.

Noone really knows when the economic recovery will occur. It basically agreed

upon that the in the long run, the economy will recover. Some economist say the fundamental recovery in the long run are strong. The factors leading to this conclusion are inflation has been pretty low and stable in the United States. This allows our market system to work efficiently, and it has allowed the Fed the flexibility to ease policy aggressively. In terms of fiscal policy, we came into the current situation with the federal budget in surplus. That promoted private saving and investment, and it allowed fiscal policy to ease aggressively.

Also, out economy has a resilient structure, financial markets are deregulated, the banking system is sound, and our labor markets are flexible so we can adjust relatively quickly to the kinds of shocks we’ve recently suffered. Also, the kinds of technological advances that propelled the economy in the latter half of the 10s are still in train. These developments operate on a long time scale, and they’re not likely to be affected

much by the kinds of cyclical developments we face today. 8

In conclusion, the /11 terrorist attacks on America changed the country forever, for despite the historical reality that global terrorism had existed for nearly thirty years, the ambitious nature of the attacks upon New York City and Washington D.C. And the terrible death toll that resulted demonstrated that terrorism had become a strategic threat

to the United States.

The American economy suffered from /11 not only in an immediate and short term sense, it was also damaged due to the knowledge among economic producers and consumers that another attack could come at any time and have been more serious consequences. This has long term negative implications, for because of fears of more attacks, consumers don’t travel as much, which is crippling the airlines, and are hesitant to spend their money on products or services, which loses other consumers their jobs and escalate the economic downturn even further. Although one can totally relate the problems given to the insurance and Airline industry to September 11th. One can’t be sure of the true reason for the decline in other aspects of the economy following the attacks. It could have been totally because of the regular business cycle, which was on the downside before the attacks. One thing we all can agree on is, the United States economy will recover.

What is Literature?

Websters dictionary defines literature as all writings in prose or verse of an imaginative character, all such writings having permanent interest, and exellence of form. But what exactly does this mean? First of all who has the power to decide which works are of exellence and which arent? And with whose permanent interests do these works of exellence deal with? In his essay What is literature? Terry Eagleton analyzes the different interpretations of the meaning of literature in different times and places, to then bring to light the idea that any meaning given to literature cannot be objective, ergo it must have a subjective meaning.

Eagleton first communicates to us that the meaning of literature cannot be a distinction of fact and fiction. This is because in the process of characterizing literature through the means of fact and fiction a large amount of discrimination exists. As some defined literature to be imaginative or fictional writing, works within the same subject were sorted into those being considered literature and those which were not. That is to say that while one of the works was included as literature the other would end up being excluded. Such is the case of philosophy by Lamb considered literature, and yet philosophy by Benthan was not considered literature.

Eagleton also observed that the meaning of literature was defined in many ways by the use of language in peculiar ways. Many believed language to be what made monotonous situations seem like extraordinary events to the reader. But this definition is also subjective, because what we may see as intensified ordinary speech can be altered by place and time. The Formalists were of the opinion that literature was a special kind of language. But as Eagleton explains there doesnt exist just one normal language that can call for a special language.

Vin Diesel- Media Coursework

For my English coursework I have been asked to look at an article by David Eimer on

Vin- Diesel and analyse whether or not the article is being critical towards him.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Vin Diesel media coursework

essay writing service

Here are my conclusions

With the article is a very attractive picture of Vin- Diesel. He looks a very cool slick guy, with his stylish sunglasses and his smooth shaven head. I think the image alone immediately attracts the younger generation in particular as the cool, heroic, fearless role model. From looking at the caption I would suspect the article is to promote him, his stunts, his looks, however I find it to be rather deceiving. As it could be a very sarcastic way of showing his image. Especially being in the newspaper “The Sunday Times”, I as a viewer may not believe everything I read, as newspaper articles are not always reliable for information. I am not there, I am being told information that’s to say whether it is true or not at the moment it’s Vin- Diesel Verses the media. Especially the fact that this is a written article. Things come across differently in the flesh. Body language, face expressions, tone in voice, perhaps not this article but articles can be very unreliable. Newspapers sometimes twist information to make them sound negative things he says or the way he says them.

However I do think the lay out of the article is good, text is laid out round the image.

The article is I think is aimed at teenagers, however, the article may change their initial thoughts of him.

I think that the tone of the author is quite sarcastic and critical and doesn’t really make Diesel out the hero he may be. For instance the reporter says, “He certainly looks the part with his bulging biceps and sunglasses…He sounds the part, too, with a voice as low as the rumble of an underground train. Is so low in fact, that I keep having to crane towards where he is slumped, opposite me on a sofa in a Beverly Hills hotel.” This comment is a really sarcastic way of saying his voice is so low I can’t even hear him, and he can’t even sit on a chair properly. I don’t see this in anyway really promoting him. Just for the record, I have watched his movies and also a few interviews and I can’t honestly say I agree with the reporter. Diesels voice is rather unique but not so you can’t hear him.

There is also the part of the article where he is being contrasted with his icon Mel Gibson, “In contrast Diesel, 5, is a former New York Night club bouncer with a modest list of credits and a silly but memorable screen name. This Basically saying Mel Gibson is an instantly recognisable artist, Diesel isn’t and has a stupid screen name.

The reporter also mocks Vin-Diesels Mother and her job. As you can see there is quite a negative, sardonic and cynical tone.

Reporter- “ Diesel never seemed to have doubted that he would become famous. Disappointingly, his astrologer Mother never read it in the stars…” Suggesting that astrologers can’t see it in the stars, his Mother never thought he would become famous, its all make believe, basically mocking her and her job.

The tone of the writer is almost always sarcastic. I think the reporter does know what a hit Vin is, but he often criticizes to make the article juicier to stir things a little.

Perchlorate Essay

In reference to the article “Rocket-Fueled River” by Cheryl Hogue, I would have to say my opinion of the pollution caused by perchlorate exposure is some what of an outrage. It seems careless to say the least that for so long this ion was being distributed in so many different parts going unnoticed. Although clean up for it is underway now, I strongly think that the government and surrounding companies that littered this material should provide more financial funding so that a more effective and quicker method of removing it could be used.

For one, if this ion is harmful to human life in any way, it would seem that those responsible would do their part in helping get rid of it. The article said that the amount that a human could have before it became a risk was still undecided. In my opinion, any amount is a potential danger and should be further looked into for an exact measurement. This substance is a risk to infants and those with thyroid problems. How can it be fair to them to not know how much will harm them and how much they can handle? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should put in some more effort to find out a set amount.

Also this water is not just affecting those that live near the Colorado River. It has spread to parts in Arizona, Nevada and California. People all over are receiving drinking water from this river which is contaminated with perchlorate. But it is not just drinking water that could be a threat. Crops and other agricultural productions such as cattle and alfalfa growth could possess this ion. Lettuces grown in these areas are shipped all over the country for people to consume. Because of so many people all across the nation being put at a risk whether large or small, I feel like there should be more attempts to clean up this problem.

Perchlorate is a much needed ion, but the waste of it should be observed much more carefully. Its existence in water of lakes and rivers is becoming more harmful by the year. If this predicament is not taken care of it could be too late to get under control. It is already said that it could take almost fifty years to get rid of it from the waters. Fifty years seems like a long time to take when people’s lives could be in danger. It’s my opinion that we need to “buckle down” and take action to fix this potentially hazardous crisis.

Essay of New Zealand’s National Identity

A countries national identity is the way a nation perceives itself in relation to the world. Three of New Zealand’s main national identity features are the migrant society, the sporting nation and the arts culture. Each of these features are special to New Zealand’s society in different ways. By the end of this essay you will see why these are important to the identity of New Zealand.

The migrant society of New Zealand is an important identity feature. New Zealand is made up of many diverse ethnic groups. They come to New Zealand from many different countries for example, Asia, Pacific Islands, European countries, Middle East etc. Migrants are important to New Zealand for various reasons. They bring different cultures, which help new Zealand people experience different ways of life. They also bring knowledge, different types of food and business, which help with the economy of New Zealand. For example generations of New Zealand people now grow up and experience new and diverse cultures everyday because New Zealand is now such a multicultural country. We can see the different ethnic groups in Auckland alone by the pie graph below.

Pie graph showing ethnic groups in Auckland

Migrants continue to migrate to New Zealand because of our clean and green environment and our loyal and respectful reputation. This causes our ethnic diversity to keep on growing and is becoming a greater part of New Zealand’s identity everyday.

New Zealand is known to be a very sporty nation and is defiantly a main aspect of our nation identity. We have many different sports that we are well known for such as Rugby, Netball, Sailing, Hockey, Basketball and Soccer. However our national sport that we are well known for is Rugby. Our recognised Rugby team ‘ The All Blacks’ is one of the top teams in the world. In 106 the All Black returned from a worldwide tour with a triumphant 1 out of wins. And over the last few years they have been in the final or semi-finals for the world cup. Being such a small country, an achievement as great as this is definitely something to be proud of. Other than Rugby New Zealand does well in other various sports for example in 15 50 years ago from now Sir Edmond Hillary (now a well known New Zealander throughout the world) was the first man in history to conquer the highest mountain in the world Mt Everest.

Another sporting event that New Zealand takes pride in is The America’s Cup which in 17 and in 000 we victoriously won. Overall New Zealand sporting is very important to our identity more than other aspects because we are a very competitive country and are determined to always do our best also because of our size we strive to be recognized by the rest of the world. We do this best through our sport.

Another main aspect of our national identity is our art culture. Many of our artists show deep subliminal messages about the cultures of New Zealand, through different types of art. Behind each piece of New Zealand art work there is a story to be told due to most artists using the lands natural sculpture as a base to their artwork since that most New Zealand artists are very in touch with our beautiful innate surroundings. For example as you can see in the picture below by Robyn Kahukiwa he uses significant symbols of New Zealand Tapu (sacred) Objects such as the moko (Maori face tattoo) the greenstone tiki, the flax piupiu (traditional Maori skirt), the feather cloak that only Maori chief wore and the New Zealand flag in the background.

Robyn Kahukiwa - Woman In Piupiu

And this is only one of the many artists of New Zealand. The art culture is so important to the identity of New Zealand because it is what carries on the legends of New Zealand and makes us all remember our ancestry and our beautiful country.

In conclusion New Zealand has many identities but

- The migrant society

- The sporting Nation

- The art culture

are the ones that stand out as the most important national identity aspects. These are the most important because our main qualities as New Zealanders are our accepting, competitive and creative personalities and these compliment our most important national identity features.

Arnold loves Orgies, so did Caligula.

I see some startling similarities in this future governor and the great Roman Emperor. It makes me worry what California is getting itself into if they vote for Arnold “swollenpecker”. I list below several examples to support my case.

Caligula Became a vicious tyrant soon after taking office.

Arnold Well.. he married a Kennedy, some of the worst tyrants of the 0th century. I hear he plans on quadrupling the state debt and raising joblessness. Also as part of a get fit program, he intends to add anabolic steroids to local drinking water.

Caligula Had people tortured and killed while he dined.

Arnold Tortures and (possibly) kills people with a string of BAD movies.

Caligula Made his horse a Senator

Arnold Owns 6 (or more) Hummers, plans on making one of them mayor of San Francisco (the red one I think?)

Caligula Infamous for his debauchery and Orgies

Arnold Loved to gang bang back in his He-Man days..

Caligula Declared himself a God and had temples erected and sacrifices offered to himself.

Arnold Even though his youth and most of his muscles are gone, he thinks he’s a God. One who can still do another Terminator movie. A 50 year old Terminator, give me a break! I heard he sacrifices animals to the God Baal too.

Caligula Was assassinated after only a brief term as “the worst” and BEST Roman Emperor.

Arnold SNIFF I’m going to miss the big lug…. Et Tu Brute… oh wait, that was Julius Ceasar. Et Tu Bustamante?

The Sick Rose

In William Blake’s poem “The Sick Rose”, he uses dark diction to portray the image of a sick rose which symbolizes the emotional distress one lady encounters when she discovers she is not loved anymore.

Blake uses phrases like “thou art sick”, “The invisible worm” and “the howling storm” for a number of different reasons (Insert). First of all, he sets a darkened mood and tone and creates an image that causes the reader to picture an appalling moment in this particular lady’s life. Then he uses these phrases to create imagery so he can depict a tone in which the reader will discover as atrocious or appalling.

First, we examine Blake’s phrase “thou art sick” (Insert). His placement of this phrase as the opening line in the poem gives rise to the thought that this is an appalling poem. Blake could have made this statement at the end of the poem, but he chose not to. Instead, he does this because he is foreshadowing what is to come.

When he writes “The invisible worm that flies in the night,” (Insert) make note of the use of worm. A worm crawls and digs slowly in a dark dirty environment. Now this runs parallel to the feelings she encounters when her lover starts to become weary of his love for her. When he stopped sensing his love for her, she did not notice right away. It was a slow gradual thing like a worm crawling in dirt. Describing the worm as invisible and portraying it as flying in the night shows how this lady did not foresee her lover’s ending love. Like a bird in the sky, it can’t be heard and if it is nighttime, the bird can’t be seen either. It was as if her lover didn’t know his love was ending for her either.

Next, Blake writes “In the howling storm” (Insert). This phrase is perfect in use as a sequencing tool. The sequencing he uses when he writes this poem shows how the lady has noticed her lover does not care for her anymore and she finally is struck with the thought of her one and only someone not being her one and only someone anymore. When all of a sudden the storm hits and causes a great deal of damage to the countryside or in this poem, her life. In comparison to the lady’s love life, she was only gradually affected by her lover’s changing feelings until one day she realized what was really happening in his mind and then it hit her hard, just like the howling storm.

Lastly, Blake writes at the end of the poem, “Does thy life destroy” (Insert). He chose this phrase to conclude his poem not because he was metaphorically speaking, which is contrary to my thesis, but because he was speaking literally. He puts an end to all of the wondering in what he really meant. This lady has been so deeply saddened that she has decided to commit suicide because she doesn’t want to live without her one and only’s love.

In conclusion, William Blake speaks metaphorically (except for the last line) as to provide imagery and distressing diction to portray this woman’s love life after her boyfriend has had changing thoughts concerning his love for her. I have chosen only to examine these particular phrases to show that Blake’s use of metaphorical phrases has conveyed this detailed imagery.

Blake, William. The Sick Rose. Literature Reading Fiction, Poetry and Drama. Ed. Robert DiYanni. New York McGraw-Hill, 00. Insert after 77.

At the end of T. Coraghessan Boyle’s short story “Carnal Knowledge,” the main character, Jim, feels “plucked and gutted and served up on a platter.” While his intentions for participating in the animal rights campaigns throughout the story were false and insincere, I do not feel that Jim deserved the treatment that he received from Alena at the end of the story.

Throughout the story, Jim is portrayed as just another “typical guy” who will go to all lengths to win over a woman’s heart. In the beginning of the story, Jim tells us how he is currently “between relationships,” and how he is spending his birthday alone on the beach, reading a book and “feeling sorry” for himself. We also learn that he has had the same “dull” job for nearly ten years, and has recently grown to dislike it. Clearly, Jim does not have much going for him at the time, and a girlfriend, or simply someone to spend time with, would be ideal.

Alena then comes along, and Jim suddenly sees her as a golden opportunity to improve his life. He chooses to spend the night with her, rather than “heading over to his mother’s house for dinner and the cake with candles,” and goes back to her bungalow, soon realizing that Alena is a very interesting woman with extremely strong views on animal rights. This is when Jim’s “typical guy” portrayal kicks in, and he decides that in order to win over Alena’s heart he is going to have to agree with her and speak out against animal cruelty as well. While in the beginning of the story, Jim admits that he “never really thought much about meat,” and has always enjoyed eating it, he decides that giving it up would be well worth it.

Jim soon falls in love with Alena and finds himself quitting his job in order to attend the many protests and animal rights functions that Alena attended daily. Though in the back of his mind he knows that if he had the chance he would eat meat and enjoy it, he refrains from it, simply to make Alena happy.

At the end of the story, when Alena leaves Jim and decides to go to Wyoming with Rolfe, I truly feel bad for him. Throughout the story he struggles in every possible way just to get this one woman to love him, but in the end comes out with nothing. While many would say that they do not feel bad for Jim due to the fact that it is not right to take on a false identity simply to gain a romance, I feel that Jim’s decision to take on these false beliefs and identity are completely justifiable. Jim saw Alena as someone who could improve his life in many ways, and was willing to give up his job, as well as his love for meat, in order to satisfy her. Personally, I feel that Alena was rather selfish in her treatment of Jim. She never truly took the chance to get to know him, and was only concerned with her own interests. In a sense, I feel that, from the very beginning, Alena actually realized that Jim was just another “typical guy” and completely took advantage of him, knowing that he would do almost anything to make her happy. After all that Jim goes through, I strongly disagree with the way that Alena simply disregards him and leaves with Rolfe. He gave up everything to gain what he thought would be a great woman, only to realize that he had completely lost in the end.

Boy Gets Girl is a very interesting play for not only about what could go wrong on a blind date, but also because it shows how people can perceive others. The story all when Linda a friend of Theresa’s decided to set her up on a blind date with a guy whom she hardly knew. Theresa does not seem much like a person who wants to date a lot in the story but decides to try it and see how it goes. Tony the blind date seemed very polite in the beginning polite and really interested in getting to know Theresa. However, there was a certain edge to Tony that Theresa did not seem to notice on the first date.

After the first date with Tony, Theresa received flowers from him at her office the next day. She also ended up having a second date with Tony. The second date did not seem to go so well. She didn’t feel like there was any connection with Tony and therefore she decided to tell him so that he could move on and date other people. Tony seemed to be fine with it but you could tell that he was a little let down by it. After the dates were off Tony decided to keep calling Theresa no matter how much she told him she did not want him to. He also popped up in her office unexpected.

After a while, Tony continued to harass Theresa. Theresa started to blame her friend Linda who hooked the two of them up. Howard, Theresa’s boss did not think anything of the subject when he became aware of it. He just said that Tony was a “smuck” and went about his way.

After a while Theresa started received threatening phone calls at home as well as work. She did not know how Tony had gotten her number because she had not given it to him. In the letters he was writing to Theresa, he was stating thing about raping her and killing her in different ways. Theresa then decided to get the police involved and file for a protection order to keep him from harassing her. She decided to stay at the home of Mercer who was a coworker. The reason was because she did not feel safe at home.

The entire time this personal situation in her life is going on in her life she is writing an article about Les Kennkat who is a person that takes picture of “breast in the trees”. He seemed like a really perverted yet comical man. He was up in age and lonely as well as bitter. I believe he was bitter because he was old and messed up the relationship with the only women he really loved. He was also having health problems and in the end he had surgery on his colon.

After staying at Mercers house, people started to know that Theresa was wearing the same clothes every day. Her secretary was buying her little presents like perfume. In the end the Harriet, Theresa’s secretary decided to tell her that she had gave Tony her number and talking to him about a lot of things. That is why she was giving Theresa gifts. Needless to say, Harriet was no longer Theresa’s secretary.

Tony would stop at nothing, he continued watching Theresa and even following her friends. Mercer and Howard decided to go to Theresa’s apartment and get her some clothes only to become aware that someone had broken into in and trashed it. Everything was tore to shreds. Everyone knew who had done it, Tony. Ms. Beck, the female police officer that has been help Theresa out, told Theresa that she should move and change her name. In a simple phrase, she should change her life around because of this jerk.

Theresa ended up going to her apartment and went throw all the belonging which were mostly destroyed and became depressed again. There were things Tony had written in books she say. He has been all over her house. She told Mercer and Howard she was moving to Denver and changing her name to Claire. She did not want to go, and they believe she should not have to go. All of a sudden the bell rings and Tony is outside. Mercer grabs the frying pan and begins to chase Tony. Everyone seems to be in a stage of panic. The police were called but Tony was nowhere to be found. In the end Theresa, had Les Kennkats help in getting to Denver but the play never says if she went.

This play kept me on my toes. I believe a woman can get interested in this play because some of the things mention happens to almost every woman some point in their life. There may not be a stalker but, there could be a boyfriend that doesn’t want to let go or strangers on the street wanting to stare you dare and say things that are not called for. It also shows what the boundary is for stalking. However, I did not like the way it ended. I was so mad not to find out if they ever caught Tony and if Theresa got to stay in New York or did she have to change her life around. Theresa being able to get help shows so much bravery. Even though she was not by herself. She was brave enough to keep telling Tony no and to leave her alone. She also got the police involved, which took a lot of courage knowing it could make him madder at her.
