Macbeth was one of the shortest plays William Shakespeare wrote. In 1605 and 1606 the play was performed at the Globe theater in London. The play was first published in the year 16. Some people would say change is good for all of us. In the play Macbeth change is both a positive and negative force. Throughout the play both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth change. In comparing the married couple they are like opposites.

Lady Macbeth changes dramatically throughout the play. In the beginning of the play she is evil. "Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty!"(Act,1 Scene5, Line40) This quote is when Lady Macbeth is changing herself from a good women to one that is dark and evil. After becoming evil and Macbeth is granted Thane of Cawdor she is on a mission. She has the desire to see her husband obtain the throne through murder. She urges him to kill King Duncan. At first Macbeth is a bit hasty with the whole idea. "Yet do I fear they nature; it is too full o' th' milk of human kindness, to catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great. At not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it."(Act1, Scene5, Line16) In this quote Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth he would be a good king but is too afraid to kill. Throughout most of the play Lady Macbeth influences Macbeth to do evil things. In the end she changes and wants to end the killing. "Out Damned Spot! Out, I say! One two why, then ‘tis time to do ‘t. Hell is murky. Fie, my lord, fi! A soldier, and a afeard?"(Act5, scene5, line6) This quote shows that Lady Macbeth has had enough of the evil ways and is trying to wash the blood off of her. Lady Macbeth went full circle being good, becoming evil, then good once again.

Macbeth is the main character of the play and changes the most. In the beginning he is a loyal fighter and good man. He has no desire to become king. "If chance will have me king, why chance may crown me with out my stir."(Act1, scene, line144) In this quote Macbeth is saying that he is not going to go out of his way to become king but if it happens then so be it. He begins to change because of his evil wife Lady Macbeth. After he becomes Thane of Cawdor she wants him to keep on climbing the ladder to king. She asks him to kill King Duncan.. Macbeth doesn't want any part of it. "Besides, this Duncan Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been so clear in his great office, that his virtues will plead like angels trumpet-tonged-against the deep damnation of his taking off."(Act1, Scene7, Line16) This is Macbeth saying that it wouldn't be right to kill Duncan because he is a good man. This is just one of many more kills to come for Macbeth. The witches were also key to him crossing over to the dark side. They said he would become king in the future, from then on he was motivated to become king. Towards the end he is so evil he goes back to the witches. "I conjure you, by that which you profess, howe'er you come to know it, answer me. Though you untie the winds and let them fight against the churches, though the yesty waves confound and swallow navigation up."(Act4, Scene5, Line50) At this time in the play Macbeth is asking the witches what they see in the future and from their evil advice Macbeth went from loyal to wicked.

When comparing Macbeth and Lady Macbeth they are totally opposite. In the beginning Macbeth would say things like, "Still it cried, sleep no more! To all the house Glamis hath murdered sleep, and therefore Cawdor shall sleep no more. Macbeth shall sleep no more."(Act, Scene, Line40) Basically Macbeth is saying he felt sorry for killing Duncan and its going to eat at him forever. While in the beginning Lady Macbeth was saying things like, "Art thou afeard to be the same in thine own act and valor as thou art in desire?" Lady Macbeth is saying to be afraid to kill Duncan. So in the beginning Macbeth was good and Lady Macbeth was evil. Toward the end they switched attitudes. Even if Macbeth wanted to become good again he couldn't. "And bedtimes I will, to the weird sisters. More shall they speak, for now I am bent to know, by the worst means the worst. For mine own good, all causes shall give way. I am in blood, stepped so far that, should I wade no more."(Act, Scene4, Line14) Macbeth is saying that he is in too deep now and there is no way back to good faith.

Change is a inevitable force no one can avoid whether good or bad. The changes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth underwent tell the Story of William Shakespeare's Macbeth. In comparing them it is quite ironic how Lady Macbeth wanted Macbeth to become evil when he was good then she became good and he was evil. In the end they both got what they deserved, a permanent bed six feet under ground.
