A long path leads from the origins of primitive ?life,? which existed at least .5 billion years ago, to the profusion and diversity of life that exists today. This path is best understood as a product of evolution. Contrary to popular opinion, neither the term nor the idea of biological evolution began with Charles Darwin and his foremost work, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (185). Many scholars from the ancient Greek philosophers on had inferred that similar species were descended from a common ancestor. The word ?evolution? first appeared in the English language in 1647 in a non-biological connection, and it became widely used in English for all sorts of progressions from simpler beginnings. Some common errors about the theory of evolution are illustrated by such questions as ?If man evolved from the apes, then why are there still apes?? The theory of evolution is not equivalent to Darwinism. The term Darwin most often used to refer to biological evolution was ?descent with modification,? which remains a good brief definition of the process today. The extensive evidence in support of both fact and theory of evolution is an interrelated set of now well confirmed hypotheses including descent with modification, natural selection, and genetics as being the mechanisms behind the evolutionary process itself.

The descent with modification component of evolutionary theory is that all life forms can trace their lineages back to earlier classes of life forms in a branching, ?nested? hierarchy (forming what looks like a bush or tree, as in the ?Tree of Life?), which can ultimately be traced back to the beginning of life on earth (a point that would likely have been the culmination of a long period during which the distinction between living and non-living matter would have been difficult to make). During the long period since that time, changes in body plans have accumulated in diverse directions to make all the differences we now see between all life forms. To continue the tree analogy, a person can start from the tip of any arbitrarily chosen twig and follow it back to the point where it joins another twig, the ?common ancestor? of the two (or more) twigs. That now thicker twig or branch can then be traced back to where it joins another branch. This process can be repeated until that person ultimately reaches the trunk. Applied to evolution, each twig and branch represents a particular lineage; the points where there is a joining of those twigs and branches represents the common ancestor of all the lineages that can be traced back to that point. Note that the descent with modification hypothesis can be tested independently of any ideas about how it happened, the mechanism behind it. Of course, the mechanism introduced by Darwin was that of natural selection (along with the additional view that natural selection proceeded in a gradual, steady fashion).

Darwin proposed that evolution could be explained by the differential survival of organisms following their naturally occurring variation, a process he termed ?natural selection.? According to this view, the offspring of organisms differ from one another and from their parents in ways that are heritable; that is, they can pass on the differences genetically to their own offspring. Furthermore, organisms in nature typically produce more offspring than can survive and reproduce given the constraints of food, space, and other environmental resources. If a particular off spring has traits that give it an advantage in a particular environment, that organism will be more likely to survive and pass on those traits. As differences accumulate over generations, populations of organisms diverge from their ancestors.

A particularly compelling example of speciation involves the 1 species of finches studied by Darwin on the Galapagos Islands, now known as Darwin?s finches. The ancestors of these finches appear to have emigrated from the South American mainland to the Galapagos. Today the different species of finches on the island have distinct habitats, diets, and behaviors, but the mechanisms involved in speciation continue to operate. A single year of drought on the islands can drive evolutionary changes in the finches. Drought diminishes supplies of easily cracked nuts but permits the survival of plants that produce larger, tougher nuts. Droughts thus favor birds with strong, wide beaks that can break these tougher seeds, producing populations of birds with these traits. It has been estimated that if droughts occur about once every 10 years on the islands, a new species of finch might arise in only about 00 years.

Darwin?s original hypothesis has undergone extensive modification and expansion, but the central concepts stand firm. Studies in genetics and molecular biology, fields unknown in Darwin?s time, have explained the occurrence of the hereditary variations that are essential to natural selection. Genetic variations result from changes, or mutations, in the nucleotide sequence of DNA, the molecule that genes are made from. Such changes in DNA now can be detected and described with great precision.

Genetic mutations arise by chance. They may or may not equip the organism with better means for surviving in its environment. But if a gene variant improves adaptation to the environment (for example, by allowing an organism to make better use of an available nutrient, or to escape predators more effectively, such as through stronger legs or disguising coloration), the organisms carrying that gene are more likely to survive and reproduce than those without it. Over time, their descendants will tend to increase, changing the average characteristics of the population. Although the genetic variation on which natural selection works is based on random or chance elements, natural selection itself produces ?adaptive? change; the very opposite of chance.

Evolutionary change continues to this day, and it will proceed so long as life itself exists. In recent years, many bacterial pathogens have evolved resistance to antibiotics used to cure infections, thereby requiring the development of new and more costly treatments. In some frightening cases, bacteria have evolved resistance to every available antibiotic, so there is no longer any effective treatment. In the case of HIV, which causes AIDS, significant viral evolution occurs within the course of infection of a single patient, and this rapid evolution enables the virus to evade the immune system. Many agricultural pests have evolved resistance to chemicals that farmers have used for only a few decades. As we work to control diseases and pests, the responsible organisms have been evolving to escape our controls. Moreover, scientists can perform experiments to study evolution in real time, just as experiments are used to observe dynamic processes in physics, chemistry, and other branches of biology. To study evolution in action, scientists use organisms like bacteria and fruit flies that reproduce quickly, so they can see changes that require many generations.

The extensive evidence in support of both fact and theory of evolution comes primarily from studies of descent with modification, natural selection, and genetics. Evolutionary biology is a strong field of science. A theoretical framework that encompasses several basic mechanisms is consistent with the patterns seen in nature; and there is abundant evidence demonstrating the action of these mechanisms as well as their contributions to nature. Hence, evolution is both a theory and a set of established facts that the theory explains. Like every other science, there is scientific debate about some aspects of evolution, but none of these debates appear likely to shake the foundations of this field. There exists no other scientific explanation that can account for all the patterns in nature, only non-scientific explanations that require a miraculous force, like a creator. Such super-natural explanations lie outside of science, which can neither prove nor disprove miracles. Science provides us with a compelling account and explanation of the changing life on Earth. Internal Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

There are several things I feel, or have been told, I am good at. I have always enjoyed physical fitness and everything that goes along with it such as nutrition, lifting weights, jogging, and other forms of exercise. I have even attained a Personal Trainer certification. Although this has been an enjoyment in my life, I am more focused on business and finance as a career so I will narrow the rest of my choices to those that have something to do with business or finance. I like having freedom to make many decisions on my own in a work setting and autonomy has always been a strong point. I am ambitious enough to be able to function alone and without constant input from supervisors. Previous employers have told me that a strength I have is selling. I feel that I can only sell well because I typically truly believe in what I am selling. Another strength of mine flows from my ability to sell. That is the strength of enjoying what I am doing and having pride in my work. People can sense when you enjoy your job and your performance is better too. My people skills also flow from my enjoyment and confidence.

Weaknesses

Some things I am not so good at which are related to business are handling deadlines, coping with micromanagement from several supervisors who are conflicting in their wants, and staying focused when working long hours with little or no time off. I have to admit that I am not great at supervising more than a few workers at a time. It follows that I am not the world's greatest multitasking wiz. I certainly can do it, but not as well as I would like and not as well as I have seen others do it. I also do not enjoy being trapped at a desk job with no opportunity to move around. I need at least a little bit of excitement so it follows that I tend to have a tough time avoiding boredom during repetitive tasks or jobs.

Summary

Strengths Weaknesses

Autonomy Handling deadlines

Selling Handling micromanagement

Enjoyment Staying focused

Pride Supervising many people

People skills Multitasking

Confidence Avoiding boredom

External Opportunities and Threats

Career Opportunities

Industries of Interest

After much laboring, I am confident that I have narrowed the industries I am interested in down to Banking and Financial Planning. Both concern my areas of interest, which are business and finance. Both have to do with the area of accounting, which is what my degree emphasizes. And both are areas where I feel I could excel. I have always been Interested in money and investments and I am currently working in a bank. I actually enjoy the banking environment much more than I had anticipated upon taking the job.

Opportunities and Threats of Banking

Opportunities

One major opportunity in the banking industry is low unemployment. Bankers on every level are afforded the opportunity to always have a job no matter where one lives. There are banks in every city in the United States. Also since the financial service market is growing, so too will the need for banking services. Bank officers enjoy excellent geographic freedom since banks are so abundant.

Threats

While employment is good for bankers, they are susceptible to unemployment during economic recessions, which is the worst time to be out of a job. Of course the most obvious downside to working in a bank is the possibility of being involved in a robbery or extortion attempt. Many people have been permanently scarred by their experiences with bank robberies. Another possible threat is the idea that is currently floating around banks that with so many automated tellers and online banking options, the roles of "brick and mortar" banks may shrink to only a few services performed by only a few individuals.

Opportunities and Threats of Financial Planning

Opportunities

Personal freedom is my favorite opportunity of financial planning. Often Planners are self-employed and this eliminates a couple of my dislikes such as several supervisors and little time off. Financial planners who work 60 hours a week do it because they choose to in order to increase or maintain their business. Not because someone is requiring them to in order to keep their job. Of course another strength is income. According to the Jobs Rated Almanac for 001, the average income for a financial planner is $75,000 a year. Although money is low on my wants for a career, it does help.

America is currently in the longest period of economic growth in its history. With this growth have come many opportunities for financial planners. Jobs have been growing faster than people can fill them. Especially with the baby-boomers reaching retirement age, this growth is expected to remain constant. Finally, a strong plus for Financial Planning is the fact that financial planners, just like accountants are needed just as much in a recession as in a period of growth. Not so much for individuals but as consultants to industry and on the payroll at banks.

Threats

One threat is stress. While the job doesn't rate at the top of stressful jobs in America, one can't deny that risking other people's money and future comes with some degree of stress. Having to tell someone that a choice you made has cost him or her thousands of dollars overnight is not on anyone's list of favorite things but it happens every day. Also, with the rise of on-line investment groups operating with very low transaction fees and free consultation in some cases, the future of financial planners may be dimming.

5-Year Career Objectives

After obtaining my degree, I will obtain a position as a financial planner working for a bank. This way I can have the environment of a bank, which I like, and perform a job which I am very interested in. By working for a bank, I can keep learning and growing in both of the areas I'm interested in. I will begin on salary to become established with a client base. After one year, I will move to commission and hopefully have a salary of at least $50,000 a year. A year after switching to commission I will be promoted to or seek a position as an independent financial planner with no supervisor or partner above me. After more years I will take a new graduate as a junior partner so that I can learn more through teaching what I know to someone else. At this point I plan to be making a minimum of $100,000 a year.

5-Year Career Action Plan

That is where I would like to ultimately be in five years but in the meantime I have to obtain my degree, move up with the bank I am currently at so as to increase my knowledge and weight with the company, and become more educated in finance so that I can make the transition from strictly banking to financial planning for bank customers. After graduation in May of 00, I will take part time classes toward a Master's Degree in Finance. At the time of graduation, I will be promoted to Auditor at the bank. I have already been told to expect a promotion upon attaining my degree so this should not be a problem. I am currently training for the position.

I am not waiting until I graduate to begin learning about investments and finance. I have already begun and will continue to learn for two more years. Then I will move into the position of junior financial planner with the bank I am currently with in 00. If there are no positions available, I will seek the same position with other banks until I find what I want. Upon finding a position, I will continue working toward my Master's Degree and upon attaining it years after obtaining my bachelor degree I will move up to Financial Planner. One year later, five years from now, I will hire a junior partner to help with the business I have generated.

Year 00 Graduate from college

Year 00 - Start Master's Degree in Finance

Junior financial planner for bank

Year 004 Complete Master's degree

Year 005 Obtain Financial Planner position

Year 006 Hire junior partner to help run the business

Mandatory Sentences Effective or Waste of Money?

In the 180's a crime wave swept over American cities. The public and politicians began to complain that offenders were being released before serving terms that were long enough. The states wanted to send a clear message If you do the crime, you will do the time. State legislatures responded by enacting mandatory sentences "a sentence stipulating that some minimum period of incarceration must be served by people convicted of selected crimes, regardless of background or circumstances" (Cole, 00 p. 7). As a part of this "the judge may not consider the circumstances of the offense or the background of the offender, and may not impose sentences that do not involve incarceration" (Cole, 00, p. 7). These mandatory prison sentences are used most often when the crime is of a violent nature, for recurrent criminals, drug offenses, or when firearms are used. These laws have become increasingly popular and are frequently used for drug offenses. Some arguments for and against the use of mandatory minimums are usually seen pertaining to issues such as punishment, fairness, deterrence, and justice. To some proponents of these laws, "the certainty and severity of mandatory minimums make them better able to achieve incarceration's goals than more flexible sentencing policies" (Caulkins, et al., 17). According to them, those goals included punishing offenders and keeping them from committing more crimes as well as deterring others who are not in prison from committing similar crimes. Those against worry that "mandatory minimums foreclose discretionary judgment where it may most be needed, and they fear mandatory minimums result in instances of unjust punishment" (Caulkins, et al., 17). Some examples of these mandatory sentencing laws are "three strikes" or "habitual offender" laws that force judges to give a fixed sentence. Some lawmakers believe that these harsh, inflexible sentencing laws would be seen as a means of deterring others from becoming offenders. The purpose of these laws was to punish the high-level, violent offenders. Are these laws working or are they simply another waste of funds that could be used in better ways?

"Most mandatory sentences were designed as weapons in the drug war with an awful consequence we now live in a country where it's common to get a longer sentence for selling a neighbor a joint then for sexually abusing her" (Cloud, 1). This makes no sense; violent criminals should be seeing the longer sentences. How are these sentences serving as a deterrent? It seems as if it is better in the long run to commit a violent offense, you will serve less time. Some who were once proponents of these sentences are now opposing them. A Princeton professor, John DiIulio Jr., wrote a defense of mandatory sentencing laws in 14 titled "Let ‘Em Rot" now point out "that more young, nonviolent, first time offenders are being incarcerated" and states that "they won't find suitable role models in prison" (Cloud, 1). Sending young offenders away for lengthy sentences where they will serve and interact with other violent individuals increases the chance they will get out and continue to commit more crimes, maybe even more violent ones. With these mandatory sentencing requirements judges and prosecutors are prevented from "offering leniency to juveniles, even when they believe rehabilitation is possible" (Court TV.com, 001).

According to the Drug Policy Alliance, the Rand Corporation found that these types of laws "have had little significant impact on the crime and arrest rates" (Drug Policy Alliance). They also state that according to the Uniform Crime Reports, states without these laws had the lowest rates of index crimes and the highest rate of index crimes were found in the states with these types of laws (Drug Policy Alliance). This doesn't seem to prove the initial idea that these policies will serve as deterrents; in fact, it seems to show the opposite.

Write my Essay on Mandatory Sentencing for me

Depending on the state, it costs anywhere from $8,000 to $55,000 per year to lock up a prisoner. Mandatory minimum sentencing laws have contributed to America's prison population and this has caused, from 187 to 18, an increase in state spending on corrections by 0 percent (Drug Policy Alliance, 001). Currently more than "0 percent of all criminal defendants plead guilty", as the sentences get harsher, "fewer defendants will plead guilty" (Constitutional Rights Foundation, 17). This means more defendants will be going to trial and this in turn will clog the courts and cause another increase in spending. With more offenders being sent to prison and these individuals sentenced to serve longer sentences, the prison population will continue to increase. More prisons will be needed due to overcrowding and that means more money will be used for building them. This doesn't seem like an effective use of tax dollars. With tougher economic times some states are now rethinking that costly lockup strategy. The need to close budget gaps may not be the right reason to change the rules but it is a driving force behind it. "Eliminating mandatory minimums for the least-dangerous offenders is helping to free up space in overcrowded prisons to ensure that violent criminals remain locked up" (USA Today.com, 00). Michigan eliminated minimum sentencing, this move is "expected to save $41 million a year and lead to the release of more than 1,100 inmates, some sentenced to 00 years for non-violent offenses" (USA Today.com, 00). Washington also enacted a law that reduces sentences for minor drug offenses. "saving $8 million annually in prison costs. The state is funneling some of that money into drug-treatment programs" (USA Today.com, 00). According to an article titled Let's Repeal Mandatory minimums, a Gallup survey of 50 state and 4 federal judges belonging to the American Bar Association "found that 8% were in favor and 0% opposed" the federal mandatory minimums for drug offenses" (Kopel, 1). If some states are changing these laws and the majority of judges are opposed to the laws why are they still an issue? It's true that reducing crime is a concern to all and deterring crime by punishing offenders with long, harsh sentences seems like an easy way to accomplish this goal. But are these mandatory minimum sentences even fair and do the satisfy justice? It seems by the information provided that these laws create a never-ending cycle of increased spending. Increased sentences create more offenders taking their chances in court, backing up the system, overcrowding the jails and generating the need for more and more money to be spent. The overcrowding in the prisons mean more and more prisons will be needed. It's true, crime needs to be reduced, but there has to be a better and less costly way to do it. ReferencesCaulkins, J. We live in an era in which music is one of the most powerful forces available to those wanting to initiate social change. Music is a medium for philosophy, which potentially spreads very quickly from culture to culture, especially today with the internet, and the growing popularity among mainstream audiences for multi-cultural music. More and more, mainstream music is becoming eclectic of many culturally different kinds of music, as "through the conduits of commercial culture, music made by aggrieved inner-city populations in Canberra, Kingston, or Compton becomes part of everyday life and culture for affluent consumers in the suburbs of Cleveland, Coventry, or Cologne" (Lipsitz, 4).

However, because mainstream music is governed by capitalist business people, mainly in the United States, it is difficult for philosophies of any controversial or subcultural significance to find their way into the mainstream rotation. As a result, artists who want to "make it big" find it difficult to do so without "selling out"hiding or denying their cultural identities and camouflaging or ignoring issues they find important in order to please the people capable of making them famous. Also, society loses out, because with the musical front being one of the few major means of sharing philosophies and convictions, if it is being starved of most or all significant content, all society is left with is a set of shallow values and short-sighted, self-centered attitudes.

In his book, Dangerous Crossroads, Lipsitz gives an example of a band from a third-world country which attemptedand succeededto make mainstream rotation in Britain and America. In 18, a reggae band called Musical Youth, made up of all adolescent boys, released their version of a song called, "Pass the Kouchie." The song originated from a band called the Mighty Diamonds; they adapted it from an older song called, "Full Up." In "Pass the Kouchie," the Rastafarian tradition of passing the kouchie is celebrated. This ritual consists of passing around a pipe used for smoking marijuana, called a kouchie. The significance of this ritual lies in Rastafarian religious beliefs that the natural herb, "ganja," was given by Jah, their god, for them to take in in order to blot out the oppressions suffered by the Jamaican people (Lipsitz, 4). The main line threaded throughout the song asks, "How does it feel when you've got no food?"; the answer comes "Pass the kouchie…." To this day, the song is strongly associated with resistance to oppression by black nationalists (Lipsitz, 4).

When musical youth decided to cover the song and attempt to take it to mainstream audiences, their manager, Peter Collins, and the record company they signed with, demanded that they change the song first, because of its questionable content. Thus the word "kouchie" was changed to "dutchie," which is a pot used for cooking. As a result, all the depth of the song was lost; the answer to the question symbolic of oppression became "one-dimensional and literal" (Lipsitz, 8), rather than symbolic of resistance from and rebellion to oppression, as was the answer in the original version. The reasons behind this change were strictly businessthere was money to be made if the song was to make it to mainstream music scene, and the marketers knew that the only way for that to happen was if the song was stripped of controversial content (allusions to an illegal practice by a controversial subculture). In the process, it was also stripped of its cultural and societal significance.

Buy custom THE VIOCES OF CHANGE—OR LACK THERE-OF term paper

Lipsitz argues that this form of selling out was justifiable; because rather than denying their identities, the boys of Musical Youth were merely camouflaging them, in order for their culturally-significant song to be introduced to widespread audiences. As a result, aspects of Rastafarian culture were introduced to masses of people who may have otherwise been ignorant of these people. Thus, he claims that multi-cultural music, even in its sold-out form is important for mainstream markets, because it potentially educates otherwise ignorant people of cultures they might not have heard of (Lipsitz, ).

But one must consider, with the lyrics to the new version of the song becoming so covert in terms of their cultural significance, how can an entirely ignorant audience be expected to pick up on the subtleties in the song and thus become educated on this culture? The truth is, the song was changed in order for it to be turned into a commodity and ensure its popularity; and hence, bring in a profit. Consequently, the questionable though culturally significant material in the song was removed or hidden to the point that audiences remained ignorant of it. It served no purpose concerning the education of its audiences, but no thought was given to this issue, because that was not the intention behind bringing the song into mainstream rotation.

Music that originates in the United States, the pop culture capital of the world, and becomes highly popular is starved of any kind of real social significance as well, which is highly evident by top forty charts, record sales, and television shows like Total Request Live, on Music Television. This show consists of the most popular music videos, which are voted for online by pop culture's biggest audience todayadolescent music listeners. Kids go on the internet or call an eight-hundred number to vote for their favorite songs/videos, then the show shows each of them in order in the form of a countdown. Hence, it is a perfect means of observing what the most popular music consists of in today's society, to the people who will someday soon be society's major members and leaders.

Upon observing a recent episode of the show, it became clear that the songs voted for make no mention of the social problems in existence, nor any kind of social reform. They present values that are shallow and existential. The very fact that "Pass the Kouchie" had to be stripped of its cultural significance in order for it to be mainstreamed shows how shallow the industry is.

Ironically, mainstream marketers are the most powerful people in the music industry in terms of their ability to bring to public attention important societal and world issues. They decide what will become popular culturewhat mass audiences will be exposed to. Because of the massive amounts of people exposed to popular culture, "in its most utopians, popular culture offers a promise of reconciliation to groups divided by differences in power, opportunity, and experience. Commercial culture puts people from diverse backgrounds in contact with one another, creating contrasts that can call attention to existing social divisions as well as to the potential for eventual unity and community."

Unfortunately, these capitalist marketers do not make use of the status and power of their positions for the betterment of the social conditions of the world. As it seems, quite obvious at this point, the perhaps most powerful people in the world are only interested in monetary profitsno matter what the social costs or losses.

So, if the most powerful people one of the most powerful industries in the world refuse to do anything to further the knowledge of various dire social conditions throughout the world, what can be done? It is up to the artists themselves, and those who have retained education about these social conditions, to educate everyone else and thus help instigate social changes. It seems that the people who attempt to do this are only those that are members of societies in which the circumstances are highly devastating. But these are also the places in which mainstream rotation access is not centered, such as Fela Kuti from Nigeria (Lipsitz, 140). Perhaps it will take equally harsh circumstances in places like Britain and the United States before the voices of oppression and revolution will be heard, and everyone can be educated and employed to take action in the fight for worldwide social justice.

The real victims of the green eyed monster in Othello and Wuthering Heights are those who feel the jealousy rather than those on whom revenge is taken. The obvious victims in Wuthering Heights are those on whom revenge is taken. They are manipulated, hated and abused. But their suffering is only temporary, and each of the characters escape in some form or another. Thus the victims are those who feel the jealousy, namely Othello, and Heacthcliff. Each of these characters destroy their own lives as a consequence of taking revenge.Othello is at first a calm, controlled, military man who makes rational decisions " Let him do his spite; My services which I have done the signiory shall out-tongue his complaints" and he is admire d by his superiors, referred to by the Duke as Valiant Othello" Our first impression of Heathcliff is not so favorable, he is described as a ‘ dirty, ragged, black haired child" But later in life he leaves Wuthering Heights and improves himself. As Nelly says " He has grown a tall, athletic, well formed man…his countenance…was intelligent.. and his manner was even dignified."

Help with essay on Othello vs Wuthering Heights

He had created a new and better life for himself, away from Wuthering Heights but is drawn back by his love for Catherine.. But she is married to Edgar and Heathcliff's jealousy of Edgar takes him over and control him, making him ruled by passion and revenge. His revenge extends to other members of the Linton and Earnshaw clans and we even see his vengeful passion directed at Cathy, his great love Catherine's daughter "at this point he seemed ready to tear Catherine into pieces." Othello is also ruled by the same passion that stems from jealousy which we can see in a similar outburst he makes, about Desdemona his former true love " I'll tear her all to pieces!".We can see the extent to which he has degenerated from his calm self through his language. From the eloquent and controlled way he spoke to everyone, such as addressing the senators as" most grave , noble and reverend signiors', he becomes crude and passionate, exclaiming to Desdemona " O lewd minx !". He not only degenerates mentally but also physically, as he is seen having fits, and spiritually because he is prepared to deviate from the strong Christian social conventions of the time, and commit the sin of murder. So, he ruins his entire life, destroying his mind, his body, his morality and social standing all from the passion derived from his jealous.Likewise, Heathcliff life is also the ultimate victim of his own revenge. He is angry with Hindley for the misery Hindley caused him when Heathcliff was a boy. He suceeds in his revenge against Hindley, owning all his property and gains control over his son Hareton. Heathcliff is able to corrupt Hareton, letting him run wild and uneducated. But although this provides him with some satisfaction, his association with Hareton only serves to torment Heathcliff further, as he himself admits "his (Hareton) society is of no benefit, rather an aggravation of the constant torment I suffer" because of Hareton's startling likeness to Catherine and the fact that as Heathcliff himself says " Hareton seemed a personification of my youth" which remind him of what he has lost whilst in the pursuit of revenge. His treatment of Catherine also goes sour for the same reason, she only serves to reminf him of her mother, who he lost in the pursuit of revenge. The loss of Catherine is cause of Heathcliffs torment . Through the first half of the book the idea that he and Catherine are twin soulss is constantly prented, both by him and Catherine, who says " I am Heathcliff". They feel they cannot exist without each other. Catherine says "But Heathcliff through his actions towards Catherine after his return, forces her to make a choice, and in the end she carries out her own petty revenge, declaring ‘ I'll try to break their hearts by breaking my own". And so she dies, leaving Heathcliff alone in the world without his other half, a victim of the jealousy that drove him to instigate her decision.Edgar, the object of Heathcliff jeaouly, is only a victim for a temporay time. He loses Catherine but is " too good to be thoroughly unhappy long. Time brought resignation and a melancholy sweeter than common joy."He loves Cathy and lives a mostly enjoyable life, toubled slightly by the confrontations with Heathcliff over Cathy and Linton but Cathy tells him that " she should be happy with young Heathcliff" and Edgar "died peacefully .. and entirely without a struggle"Cassio, the object of Othello's jealousy is also only a victim for a temporary time. He escapes his assasination attempt and is promoted past his lost position, to Othellos job, as is told to Othello by Lodovicio " Your power and command are taken of and Cassio rules in Cyprus."Desdemona is a victim of Othello's jealousy because she is murdered by him. But she has managed to escape the torment his revenge was causing her, with her morals and beliefs still intact which we see as she dies, her last words are in response to the question " Who hath done this deed ?" but instead of revealing Othello of the killer, she absolves him of the crime by saying " Nobody but myself". She has remaind true to her lord, has protected him and remained faithful to him, which was central to her belief and morals. Shakespeare has used lots of angel images associated with Desdemona " O the more angel she (Desdemona)" which leaves the reader with the sense she will go to heaven. She will go there with her morals intact, so in a sense she has escaped and will be happy.Isabella Linton escaped from Heathcliff, who tormented her and trapped her in Wuthering Heights. She begins a new life in London and repairs the relationship with her brother that Heathcliff's marriage to her caused. She dies at the end with Edgar by her side and with the knowledge he will try and care for her son. Although her life was irreparably changed, she escaped her tormenter and is free and reconciled with her brother and the end, thus no longer a victim of Heathcliff's revenge.Cathy's life is also irreparably changed by Heathcliff's revenge against her father and his family. She is removed from her childhood, her inheritance taken, she is forced to marry an uncaring, spoilt brat, she almost never sees her dying father again and she must live in a house with nothing to do and no-one to care.. Here is seems she is a real victim of Heathcliff revenge , unlikely to ever find happiness again. But then she finds love with her cousin Hareton.Hareton had grown up with Heathcliff as his only role model, and ironically admires him despite the fact Heathcliff is the cause of his uneducated status as a servant, having deprived him of his inheritance and even of the chance to live a happy childhood. He seemed destined to live his life as a servant unaware of what Heathcliff had deprived him of. But then he found love with Cathy.Cathy and Hareton's love for one another sets the tone for the end of Wuthering Heights. We see they have finally escaped Heathcliff's, revenge, they are no longer victims, but are happy together, as Lockwood observes " They are afraid of nothing, together they would brave Satan and all his legions". Their property has been to returned to them and they are socially accepted. Othello also ends with a restoration of order. The villain was caught, Cassio reinstated and Othello has died in recompense for his actions. The Senate are being notified and life will soon return to normal in Cyprus. Both stories have ended with all the wrongs caused by the revenge of the protagonist being righted. In Othello, Cassio was reinstated and Desdemona died at least with her morals intact. But Othello sacrificed his morals, along with his mind and body, in the pursuit for revenge and thus he is the only real victim of the green eyed monster.Heathcliff lived eighteen years of torment, with the tools of his revenge, Cathy and Hareton, in the end only serving to torment him further. He sacrificed the improved educated self he had created when he went away, and also his great love, his twin soul, Catherine. Cathy and Hareton on the other hand, find happiness together and are restored to their proper status. The protagonists, those who felt the jealousy are the only real victims.

A States primary responsibility, simply put, is in taking care of its citizens. Along with this the State has to be involved with the advancement of Arts and Sciences regardlesss of the social situation. Thus to say that Art must take the back stage when the situation of people in a society is far from hunky-dory is well intentioned, but it suffers from misplaced priorities. The science of Economics has never painted an utopian picture of a state that prides itself in hundred percent employment. This is because, there will always exist such instances in any State anywhere in the world. It is the priority of the State as well as the society to keep the numbers of destitute, the unemployed and the unskilled at a minimum. Economics has also preached the disastrous consequences experienced, when the state neglects the Art and Sciences. Without financial patronage the entire framework of Art could come crashing down. Art in my understanding encapsulates the purview of Museums, Theaters, Music, Paintings, Libraries etc. Thus it is upon society to support the Arts, because without it a society could end up breeding deterministic, entirely objective automatons - a society without any Romantics, a society without an appreciation for its lineage. In the mid 14th century in Southern India, Raja Ravi Rao the king of the Chola Dynasty took it upon him to save the Temples and Paintings, or Art as was known to him, from the invading Mughals. His entire clan suffered in the attacks. Some might say it was improvident on his part to spend large amounts of money in this endeavour when he could have salvaged his brethern instead. But if he had taken, the latter route we might never have been able to marvel at the Architectural glory of 14th Century India. Sometimes, protecting Art at all costs is the best that we can do for our future generations - when the Ozone, the Wildlife, and natural resources are at peril. And in the present day context, when Society faces no great danger of Anhilation, the onus is upon the society itself to protect the great works of yore as well as promote Art to the fullest.History forms an intergral part of the Arts. And from History one learns not to make the same mistake twice. History makes us aware of our rich and varied past testimonials to past events lie in Museums, they lie on Broadway, the lie with the indigenious natives in the Dakotas. These need to be identified and supported by Society as they constitute our Heritage.

But should Arts be protected at all costs? The answer again lies in the Science of Economics. Developing countries cannot spend enough for the Upkeep of their Cultural Heritage. There exists no moot point in their line of reasoning as their priority lie in improving the decrepit condition of their citizens. This is where global organizations such as UNESCO and the United Nations chip in with financial backing to save the respective countries cultural heritage. The idea of patronizing the Arts when members of a society suffer from the lack of employment, lack of food or even lack skills needed to survive is mildly contentious and stands inapplicable in developed societies. The Arts represents our heritage. Its constitutents acts as a tremendous source of upliftment of society as a whole and thus figures that indicate a moderately high level of unemployment should not be responsible for pushing the Arts into the back seat.

Nepal is located in the Asian. This country borders with the Tibet Region of People's Republic of China in the north and India in the east, south and west. Nepal has a wide range of altitudes, varying from

70 meters above sea level to 8848 meters about sea level. This variance shows the vast range between the low-lying areas that are home to the Nepali villages to the peak of Mount Everest. The national language of Nepal is Napli. The natives to the area with higher education speak English. There are two distinct groups of people the Indo-Aryans and the Mangoloids.

Nepal is one of the least developed and poorest country in the world. Approximately eighty percent of the population rely on agriculture as their mainstay income. Nepal has been listed as being in need of industry to help alleviate the poor economy, as the land is being over used and damaged. Nepal has eight of the ten highest mountain peaks , including Mount Everest, and is the birthplace of Buddha. The tourist income is not enough to change or strengthen the economy. While doing research on Nepal, I came across information on the wildlife and all the endangered species calling Nepal home. Nepal has a large well defined wildlife conservation, the Royal Chitwan National Park

The Royal Chitwan National Park which stand today as proof of nature conservation in Nepal. This is the first National Park of Nepal established in 17 to preserve a unique eco system . The park covers the protected area of square kilometers in the Terai lowlands of southern central part of Nepal. The Park gained recognition in the world when it was included on the list of World Heritage Site in 184. Only a very small part of the national park is used for tourism. The majority of the land, particularly in the hills, remains untouched. This is ideal for wildlife, and also preserves an degree of secrecy for humans; because large areas are still unexplored. The knowledge of what birds and animals in the park is by no means complete , and there is always the possibility of making new discoveries. In 177 numerous additions and improvements were made to the park. Parsa Wildlife Reserve was established in 184 and is safeguarded by the same laws and sanctions that cover Chitwan National Park. This landmark is adjacent to Chitwan.

Chitwan National Park and the adjacent Parsa Wildlife reserve are the largest and the least disturbed example of sal forrest and other communities in the Teria. A long and strong history of protection for the Chitwan National Park dates back to the 1800's. Documentation and many documentaries have been done on the diverse and dynamics of Chitwan National Park. There is a large number of visitors to the park for many reasons the background of the Himalayas, the natural beauty of the land, the natural history and of course the numerous animals that call Chitwan National Park home.

Chitwan is noted for is diverse collection of mammals and birds. There are more than forty-three species of mammals, over 450 species of birds, and more than forty-five species of amphibians and reptiles in the park. Chitwan is also documented as having the second largest number of Indian rhinoceros in the world. The Chitwan's tall grasslands and riverine forests are an important refuge for both tiger and gharial crocodile. This park also houses many other endangered species such as pythons, four-horned antelope, Gangetic dolphin and striped hyenas.

While Chitwan National Park and the associated Parsa Wildlife Preserve are closely watched, regulated and sanctioned by the government, the park is not without local conflicts. The residents of the area criticize the park. The areas that seems to cause these complaints include loss of life (residents killed by Chitwan wildlife), loss of livestock to Chitwan wildlife, damage to crops and reduced access and increased restrictions to the park's resources. These resources include hunting, fishing , grazing, collection of fuelwood and other natural products used for food and medication. These issues are noted more as the population of both animal and human increase. The park staff and management address these concerns and do work with the locals to try and work out a solution. Where animals and humans live so closely and freely there will always be dangers but these are minimized as much as possible by the staff of Chitwan. The locals do begrudge the park at times but seem to tolerate the park and the animals due to the importance and the rarity of the park.

Chitwan National Park brings in tourists year around helping the economy of the area. There are many small lodges and restaurants that are close to the park where the visitors stay. The park also has lodging available within the complex. The park employs many locals in the area as groundskeepers, clerical, feeding, guide staff and other positions important to keep the park running smoothly. One lodge holds a yearly elephant polo tournament , thought to be the only one of its kind. Chitwan National Park is one of the few wildlife reserves where tourists and researchers are able to take guided tours of the wildlife not confined. Chitwan National Park is not a zoo; the animals are wild and free. Chitwan is a conservation area for both animal and natural resources; making this park very important not only to Nepal but to the world. In the park researchers, animal lovers and tourists alike are able to study and observe endangered species in their natural habitat and learn to respect and preserve wildlife. That proud, tall-standing nation with the will to make the world a better and safer place always endeavouring to put others above themselves. Wait a minute; maybe that's just what we see in the media, one of the many things that America subtly controls in the world.

The Bush Administration's latest positive influence into the world is the war on Iraq. They moved in troops without UN approval and only a few countries backing. They claim the reasons for this war are to disarm Iraq from any chemical weapons that could be used on "the western world" or "the free countries". They have found no weapons of mass destruction; they have killed many civilians, destroyed whole villages, and left people hungry as they carry on trying to hunt out Saddam Hussein. All in a days work for the world's most powerful nation.

Cheap College Papers on The Hidden Truths on America

You may remember near the start Operation Iraqi Liberation; also know as Operation "OIL". The Iraqi soldiers were parading some American captives around and showing them on Iraqi TV. This caused an out roar from the American government. They claimed that Iraq was breeching the Geneva Convention by displaying the enemy's soldiers in a degrading, shameful way. Hardly degrading I say when they are alive and well. Then America returns the favour even after their disgust in Iraqi TV. About a week ago American troops took out Hussein's sons in a long stand-off. Afterwards they decided that it would be a good idea for them to display post-mortem photos of the sons supposedly just to put the Iraqi people at a little ease. These photos displayed the dead naked men in a degrading, shameful way with large gashes and dried blood all over their bodies. They have let the media through the makeshift morgue tents so that they can display these pictures worldwide, on TV, in Newspapers and on the Internet. If this isn't breaking the Geneva Convention then I don't know what would. Surely this is just American propaganda letting us know that they are in control and are winning this war.Maybe this thirst for war comes from home where violence, killing's and bashing are an everyday thing guaranteed to be shown that night on the news, just to fuel the levels of frightened American's. Homicide is an issue that is sadly overlooked in America. On average each year in Germany 81 people are killed by guns, France 55, Canada 165, UK 68, Australia 65, Japan . In the United States of America 11, 17 people are killed by guns alone.

Surely this would cause the government to take some hard looks at where its nation is going but Bush has other things to worry about. Like his military budget increase of 48 billion dollars which is larger than every other countries entire military budget combined. This brings their military budget to 6 billion dollars. They need that money to control and tear up other countries. Couldn't it be better spent on the million Americans living in poverty? Or maybe even the upgrading of schools, to upgrade every school in America it would cost 11 million dollars which is nothing compared to the military budget.

The media is influenced greatly by the United States. Even the BBC, which stands for the British Broadcasting Company seem to take American news as preference over anyone else. It's like they are the centre of the Universe. One thing that sticks in my mind quite vividly was earlier this year when there was a whooping cough scare in America. I was channel surfing on sky when I came to the BBC channel and heard the news presenter say "In America today there was a suspected case of whooping cough. Schools have been closed in the area surrounding and medical teams are investigating." While all of this was going on there was a banner scrolling along the bottom of the screen with the heading Other News. After this heading were the words Approximately 40 people killed in a suicide bombing in Israel. For some reason the whooping cough scare, they weren't even sure it was whooping cough and no one had died, this took preference over the 40 people killed outside of America.America also isn't helped by its shameful past, which is often tried to be covered up.In 16, the United States backed the assassination of South Vietnamese President Diem, and then from 16 to 175 American soldiers killed four million civilians all over Southeast Asia. In 17, the United States staged a coup in Chile, prompting the assassination of democratically-elected President Salvador Allende. The death of 5,000 Chileans soon followed as Dictator Agusto Pinochet was installed. During the 180's the CIA trained bin Laden along with several other terrorists, in order to get them to kill the Soviets who were trying to invade Afghanistan. Subsequently, the CIA gave them $ billion to make sure they could get the job done. The Reagan administration trained and funded so-called contras. As a result, 0,000 Nicaraguans died. On the heels of that genius decision, the United States provided Saddam Hussein, yes the very same Hussein that they are now trying to kill, with billions of dollars in aid so that he could buy weapons and murder Iranians. The year following America's "aid" to Hussein, in 18, the White House then provided Iranians with weapons so that they could kill the Iraqis. In fact, the very bullets that were used to shoot innocent kids at Columbine were purchased at their local K-Mart.I'm not trying to change you opinion on America. I just want you to realize some of the hypocritical, disgusting things that the worlds most powerful nation does. So next time you read about some wonderful thing that America is doing you should read the facts carefully and decide for yourself whether it is good, not let America dictate it to you.

Pre-nuptial agreements are like a key to your property, if you don¡¦t make a key which is the pre-nuptial agreement then in the future your partner will have access to your property thus leaving you defenseless. In this oral presentation it will be discussed how the pre-nuptial agreement work and what can be achieved if one is acquired before or during the marriage. In addition, the problems of marriage and property splitting will be one of the discourses. Since we do not get married with an eye towards the divorce courts, many Australians fail to consider the benefits of a prenuptial agreement. A financial agreement is a contract entered into between both parties either prior or subsequent to the wedding date that addresses a range of issues determined by the Family Law Act 175. Pre-Nuptial Agreements Australia or PNA was established in June 000 to identify cost effective legal service providers and develop a free information resource for all Australians. The agreement is designed to help people decide how to deal with each other both during the marriage and in the event of a separation at least so far as financial matters are concerned. At this time there is a Pre-Nuptial Agreement legal Kit that can be acquires for around $4.5. These kits are to help resolve any dispute which may arise in the future. If you are asking me if you should get it I strongly advise you all out there to get it because you never know what will happen in the future. These kits are addressing the following. They

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Pre-Nuptial Agreements

„ allow you to quickly and easily document your individual assets; „ give you background knowledge of the law; „ help you resolve any future financial dispute; give you peace of mind; and save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in legal feesHowever, at present, the Family Law Act does not specifically recognize or enforce pre-nuptial agreements. The relationship between a pre-nuptial agreement and the Family Law Act in particular in relation to altering property interest, is not established. Undoubtedly it is a factor to be taken into consideration along with other factors by the court. However, If there have been any transfers or dealings with property in reliance upon the pre-nuptial agreement, then Section 85A of the Family Law Act gives to the court the power to set such transfers or dealings aside if it considers it is fair to do so with respect to the whole or part of the property that is dealt with in that agreement. Indeed that section enables the court where it considers it just and equitable, to make orders in relation to any property which is dealt with in a pre-nuptial agreement. At the very least, unless there is strong evidence to the contrary or evidence of duress, a properly drafted pre-nuptial agreement should provide clear evidence of what the assets of the parties were at the time of the agreement (that is prior to the marriage), and the values of those assets. However, if the parties to a marriage have subsequently acquired more assets together and/or they have not acted in accordance with the terms of their pre-nuptial agreement, then the court will subsequently enforce the terms of that agreement. It is likely that the court will make orders that are just and equitable in light of all the circumstances, which may well be something different from that anticipated by way of the pre-nuptial agreement. The Family Court when dealing with property following the breakdown of a marriage is compelled by the Family Law Act to take into consideration many factors, such is the factor of how many children there is and who will be their guardian. In addition, if for example a mother decides to take a care of children then she may be entitled to wider extent of assets. Consequently, Prenuptial Agreements can also deal with property division and also spouse maintenance. They can take into account anticipated changes such as children being born and the length of a marriage, by providing for different asset splits, depending on how long the marriage lasts, how big the asset pool is, or how many children are born to a couple. You cannot, however, enter into a Prenuptial Agreement that claims to make arrangements for where children should live if a marriage breaks down, how often they will have contact with a parent, or how much child support will be paid. Parenting and child support matters depend on the best interests of a child. You cannot contract out of those matters. Additionally, even if a marriage is in existence at this point you can still enter into a financial agreement. It is because the Australian law is unique, and in that it allows couples who are already married to enter into a binding Financial Agreement that provides for how assets are to be divided if the marriage later breaks down. Both husband and wife must consent to the Financial Agreements terms and be independently legally advised. Furthermore, if a break down erupts between the family then usually the parent that has a day to day care will be entitled to the child support from the other parent. The court will usually point out how much should there be of support. But, to avoid the court fees and other mental difficulties never trust your partner because you never know if they are true or not. Therefore, make that little pre-nuptial agreement before you proceed with any further planning and try not to have big superannuation in case that your ¡§partner¡¨ decides to rob you of your dignity. Furthermore, it would be advisable not to have any children until few years of confidence is earned because if a child is in existence and a divorce is on the way than your properly will be more on your partners side if he/she has the custody of the child.

It was a usual shiny day when the city football championship began. We had to play one of the first matches. I was in the high schools football team and I worried a lot because I had never played such an important game when a lot of people watched it. This game meant everything to me because I always was interested in football. Thats why I didnt want to play the first period. However I was very angry with myself because some guys didnt play well enough and I thought I would do much better if I were in their place. And at last, the first forty-five minutes finished and I replaced one guy who couldnt play well. It seemed he couldnt do it because he was scared that he would make a serious mistake and worried as well as I did since almost a thousand people watched the game. When the second period of the game started, my heart began to beat fast and I felt something strange deep inside that forced me to make a wrong pass.During those forty-five minutes I ran like a wild animal. However in the end of the game I felt a severe pain in the right side of my stomach. It was the beginning of the trouble, which lasted for about half a year. When I went to hospital, the doctor said that the problem was the gall bladder and the liver. He added that any sport and hard work was dangerous and told me not to eat fatty products. Besides, he said that I had better take one course of treatment in the hospital that would last about three weeks. But I immediately ignored his advice because I didnt want to miss the classes that were very important since it was my final year at the lyceum. After that I felt myself as if my hands were tied or like a bird in the cage. I wanted to do what I did before; I wanted to fly and enjoy the life without any limitations in my actions. I wanted to jump, run, and sweat, but for that terrible illness which paralyzed my actions I couldnt play football. At that hard time I understood the value of healthy life, of being fit and athletic. When I watched a football match on TV or passed by a place where boys played football or other sport I felt pity because it reminded me the days I was happy and enjoyed the game. I had a great desire to kick that football and sometimes I couldnt suffer it any more and played my favorite game, but couldnt get the real satisfaction. I was very sorry for myself then. Even though I swallowed lots of pills, which werent very tasty, and tried out many ways other people recommended, and although I was on diet it, didnt make me feel better. My illness became a global problem for me because it hurt badlywhen I did something. I was ready to starve the whole week and not to eat food which contained fat. Moreover, I lost my weight and became weak. Thats why I easily got tired. However, the most terrible thing was that I had to reject my avorite meals that I missed for a long time. When I was doing my home assignment, I couldnt concentrate on it. It made me feel more terrible. I spent more time on doing it than I usually did. Since it was my last year at the lyceum, I had to study very hard and prepare for final exams, for the competition in mathematics, and for university at the same time.Thats why sometimes I was completely exhausted and tired of studying. Not only did my illness injure me physically but it also hurt my inner world. It changed me; I became depressed, frustrated and angry. Probably its the reason I seemed to behave rudely; most of my friends thought I was selfish and didnt care.Sometimes it hurt very badly and I didnt know how to kill my pain. I wanted to forget about it by doing something interesting. It worked very often and at that moment fear made me silly. It seemed to me that something terrible would happen.I was very afraid, especially, when I was alone. Then I thought about life, about my future, my family, my friends, etc., and everything got mixed up in my head in a very complex way. I thought about life without me, about what would happen if I died. Then I understood the value of living, being healthy, and that the life was beautiful. I looked differently at the surrounding world, and I saw many wonderful things that I didnt notice before. When I recovered from that disease, the robber of my happiness of being fit and living a healthy life, I felt like a free bird that escaped from a cage or like a winner of a long and tiring run. My life became more enjoyable, and I realized that everything changed. I didnt feel trapped by the thief of my dreams any more. Lots of my problems were solved as if I gained extra power. Everything returned to its usual place.Although my illness lasted for six months, I discovered a lot of important things which make life more interesting. I understood the value of health, of being fit and that life is beautiful even though sometimes we face obstacles on our way to happiness that might seem almost insurmountable. Thats why I think we must be tolerant and optimistic to make our life more enjoyable when we confront difficulties.

Images and there Impact on SocietyIcons and idols have used images to impact society forever, and have captured the ideas and intentions of the people who admire them the same. An icon has a self image that appeals to their fans and can make them stand out above the rest. Images are simply put as an out put for something that can make us feel confident, comfortable, and secure. Self images are considerably the biggest example of an image that society, as a whole needs the most. In the future, many things will have even more of an impact on society than ever before. Using images to sell products is an important way of business and life for some. Madonna has used images to make her life a success and has made it quite easy for people to have opinions relating to her career. Although many found her to be controversial she continues to sell her images by changing certain aspects of her self and probably has done it better than anyone in the world. Vince Aletti wrote that "idols and icons have the weight of memory, the volatility of desire. Images can be a consolation or a disturbance, an inspiration or a burden. We live through them; they live through us." Society as a whole needs to see other's living their lives so they have that source of comfort and have an output for their own creativity. We as people set goals relating to the people that we look up to the most. Rather it a famous icon or simply a member of our family we occasionally act like or pretend that we are them. To achieve greatness a goal must always be in sight. Even icons that are known today at one point set their goals to others' accomplishments. When icons were first developing in the world, actors and actresses were strictly admired. Years ago Audrey Hepburn was admired by women all over the United States and still remains a prestige icon today. Jennifer Love Hewitt is a big supporter of Hepburn's work and to this day still has goals set to match the effort and success of her career. It was an extreme honor for Jennifer to play Hepburn on ABC's Sunday Night Movie a while back when her dream of actually being her icon was somewhat a reality. Icons appeal to people depending on their gender and personal preference. They help us to grow up. The images that our idols portray give us something to relate to. "In Adolescence, a fluid identity is rarely an option, and eventually all but the most alienated find a place, and then another place; for better or worse, a lifetime of places." Everyone has changed their image sometime in their lifetime in a way it helping us to become the person we are now. The impact they have on their life however can relate more to the feelings that the person has on the inside. "Gender, in most cases, is not an option; we are male or female a given. But are we masculine or feminine? Even if we accept the notion that, ideally, we share both masculine and feminine traits, what exactly are they? Who decides?" The choice to be masculine or feminine is not an option for some of society. No matter how badly some men want to be "masculine" some just cannot, so they relate to others like themselves. They may not like it at first but they eventually find comfort in their icons and except it.

Unfortunately, the power of being considered an icon can come with the fact that a person can become to ‘confident' in there self. Material possessions are an example of how some get a little out of control. Icons that are constantly under the microscope of society can loose control and respect for their friends and the people closest to them. A person can carry themselves on their sleeve by showing confidence which makes them appear happy but often times they are not. It takes time to identify your self as a person and can take even longer for someone to become confident as a person. Using the images of idols and icons is easy to grasp, but relating to the ‘normal' people of our society is also a way for people to become comfortable with themselves and with others. A role model can be a teacher, a parent, or a friend. Usually this type of person has views and thoughts on life that may appeal to you as a person and can inspire you to achieve greater things in your life. Respecting these types of projected images is possibly the most important way of developing yourself as a person. Believing in the ideas of others who have been further educated than yourself can help you in developing your own ideas. Anything can be easier to accomplish when you know that your ideas are similar with others. The 70's were a very important time for people to display an image and to live independently. Rock n Roll for a few years was thought of as evil music and had only negative values to it. Can you imagine life without a source of upbeat relaxation? Parents' did not want their kids going to rock concerts fearing that only bad things would come from it. Of course a few bad images were set from rock concerts like drugs and unprotected sex, but maybe everything happens for a reason. People at one point also thought that ‘colored people' should have to drink from different water fountains and sit on different parts of the bus. People are not right about everything and god has forbidden that from happening. What would life be like today if the images and ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King had never been heard? Every generation has their own icons, role models, and idols that will continue to live on forever. Image is sought by a variety of different people and will continue into the future. People will continue to think that they were the first to attempt something "cool" and others will follow. Icons will set trends and society will follow. "We are all a work in progress." Vince Aletti.

At first glance, the name Drew Barrymore may still be associated with the wide-eyed giggly, innocent child that lit up the screen in E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial, but in reality, Drew's life fell into a continuous downward spiral only a few years after the movie was released. On the surface, people might blame Hollywood for her troubles insecurity, drug and alcohol addiction, but she openly admits that acting was actually her saving grace throughout the difficult times in her life. With a long history of drug and alcohol addiction in the Barrymore family, much of the media and tabloid headings had no problem understanding why Drew fell into a self-destructive state, but in Little Girl Lost, Drew Barrymore, with the assistance of Todd Gold, (staff correspondent for People magazine), explains the causes of her addiction and her struggle to over come it.

Drew Blythe Barrymore was born on February , 175 at Bottman Memorial Hospital in Culver City, California. Her mother, Ildyko Jaid Barrymore had chosen the name Drew before she was born to be used if the baby was male or female. Drew's father, John Barrymore Jr., (who was a well-known actor at one point in his life), left Drew and her mother before Drew was even born. In fact, the earliest memory Drew has of her father is him breaking into her mother's home and throwing them both into a wall while trying to steal a bottle of tequila. Fortunately, Drew and her mother were not hurt; but sadly, this memory has stayed with Drew for her entire life.

Drew's insecurities began at a very young age, and began with the loss of her father. She always longed for an authoritative male figure in her life, but the closest she came to having one were encounters such as this with her drunken, abusive father. This is also where Drew's resentment for her mother began. Drew held a grudge deep inside because her mother had failed to supply a replacement for her father. She had failed to find a mate who could provide Drew with the paternal affection she so desperately needed.

When Drew was just a baby, her mother took her to an audition for Gaines puppy food. While Drew was waiting for the director to say "action", the puppy that was to be in the commercial came up and bit Drew in the nose. Everyone in the room froze, fearing her response and a possible law suit, but even then, free-spirited Drew threw her head back and began to laugh. She landed the part in the commercial, and so started the acting career of Drew Barrymore. When Drew was only six years old, she landed the part of "Gerdie" in one of the biggest movies of all time, E.T., The Extra Terrestrial.

In light of her sudden stardom, Drew began to go to late night Hollywood parties with her mother. Drew would stay up all night and go to school each morning. Besides complete exhaustion, the Hollywood night-life brought upon many other harmful changes in Drew's young life. She began to smoke cigarettes at only nine years of age. Driving in a car with her friend's mother after a late-night party, Drew experienced marijuana for the first time at only ten years old. After this, Drew began to smoke marijuana regularly, but after a year or so, she was tired of the same "high" feeling she experienced from smoking marijuana, and by the time that Drew was twelve years old, she was addicted to cocaine. Drew craved that drug more than anything else in her life, and threw everything else aside. Her relationship with her mother went from loving to almost non-existent. The only time her and her mother would speak is when they were arguing. Drew and Jaid would constantly scream at each other over anything and everything. After putting up with Drew's destructive behavior and rapid mood swings for almost a year, Drew's mother finally forced her to go to a rehabilitation center.

At ASAP Rehabilitation Center, Drew endured group therapy, and family therapy once a week with her mother. As time went on, and therapy progressed, Drew and her mother finally came to terms with their feelings towards each other. Drew edured a great share of ridicule while at ASAP. Many of the other patients would mock her because of her fame. Despite plenty of urges and desire, Drew only relapsed one time over the course of the two years she spent at the rehab. At the age of fifteen, Drew was released from ASAP and decided to move out of her mother's house, despite the fact that they were finally making progress with their relationship. However, Drew no longer resented her mother. Drew's life was finally coming together.

During the time Drew spent at the ASAP Rehabilitation Center, she tried very hard not to let the press know of her troubles. However, after leaving ASAP, she realized that her efforts had failed. Finally, the story had come out. Headlines read "E.T.'s Little Girl Addicted to Cocaine and Booze!". Drew was hurt beyond belief, but she refused to fall back into the self-destructive pattern that had comforted her insecurities before. Instead, she decided to let the media, and the world, know the truth of her addiction by writing Little Girl Lost.

In Little Girl Lost, Drew Barrymore presents the reader with brutal honesty. She explains, "I'm not a miracle-worker. I'm not someone special. Whatever I've accomplished has been through hard-work, tears, pain, love, and more hard work." The general theme of her book is just that. In her autobiography, Drew proves that she can write as well as she can act. Little Girl Lost is truly a remarkable confession of one girl's fears and insecurities growing up in a hectic world. Although Drew Barrymore has overcome her addiction, no one knows what the future may hold, but as Drew says herself, "All I can do is the best I can", and that is true for all of us, whether we are famous Hollywood actresses or not.
